FOOD | TURKEY | ISTANBUL

A Triple Turkish Treat

Three things that we love to eat in Istanbul.

Stuffed mussel vendors are on many corners in Istanbul. Photo Credit: Author

As our time again winds down in Istanbul, we set out one evening to eat some foods that we loved the last time we were here.

Fish Wraps

To find fish wraps you need to be down by the water and we have found the most locations in Karaköy. They are sold by street vendors that have a complete setup available including a grill. I’m pretty sure they buy the fish directly from the guys that are fishing off the pier just steps away.

They have grilled fish ready to go but put them back on the grill when you order them to heat them up.

They load them into a tortilla with lettuce, onion, and tomatoes, then squirt some sort of brown liquid onto it all. This is the secret sauce that makes them SO GOOD! They also sprinkle a seasoning salt of some sort into and onto them, then place them back onto the grill to make them warm and delicious!

These cost less than $3 USD and are certainly a delicious treat, day and night when you are touring around the city.

Stuffed Mussels

We only tried the stuffed mussels once the last time we were here, and it was at the end of our stay. In the lead photo, you can see how various vendors present them around the city. We really did enjoy them and were eager to try them again this time. We gave the guy 40 Lira, which is about $2.25 USD, and he loaded 7 of them into a bag.

They look like normal mussels when you get them. But when you open them up, you are in for a treat.

You can get them either with or without the mussel, and they are obviously cheaper without. These ones had the mussel plus the filling which is a mixture of rice and spices. Unfortunately, I don’t know exactly what they put in them, but they are delicious. They also give you a half lemon to squeeze on them which really accentuates the flavor.

These are a great snack that will keep you going!

Künefe

We finished our night off with Künefe. Pronounced coo-ne-fay, künefe is considered to be a favored desert amongst the Turkish. It is made with shredded phyllo dough on the outside, and soft, stringy cheese on the inside. Usually, it is then topped with honey that drizzles down and makes a honey puddle underneath it.

This is the traditional one, but we have also been to restaurants that serve it with different toppings like pistachios and walnuts.

Chris got lucky with one of his scoops as he seemed to get the hidden pistachio treat that was inside.

The Turkish Foodie tells us that this desert is also popular in Syria, Iraq, and Iran. They also have more to say about Künefe if you want to learn all about it:

It was nice to check these foods off of our list this time around. We will never tire of the variety and diversity of the cuisine in Istanbul! There really is something for everyone.

Thanks for reading:)
