Pizza Turkish Style
This is a delicious, cheap, and easy meal in Turkey.

One of our favorite snacks in Istanbul is the pide. Pronounced pee-day, this delightful snack will satisfy any hunger cravings. I mean it has bread and cheese to start with, what more could you ask for?
Officially a ‘Turkish flatbread’, but also referred to as ‘Turkish pizza’ these bread boats can contain a myriad of different flavors. The one above has spinach baked into it, but they can also have sausage and spiced meat mixed in with many other ingredients.
They are best when baked in a wood-fired oven, which you find a lot here in Istanbul.
Many times we will walk past windows and they will have them lined up and waiting for you. Who can resist stopping when something looks this good and seems to be calling to you?

These can range in size and in price. The small ones pictured above were about 12" long (38cm) and costs 25 Turkish Liras ($1.40USD). The one pictured in the lead photo was one that we shared and it was more like 18–20" long (46–51 cm) and cost 54 Turkish Liras ($3 USD). These were both purchased in different parts of the city, though, so prices vary at different locations.
Either way, it is a very reasonable price for a delicious snack.
I will admit, though, that I shouldn’t be eating wheat. I was told I was allergic to it back when I was about 25 years old after suffering from numerous digestion issues as a child and young adult. I went off of it for 15 years, then as we started to travel full-time, I have had my share of sampling it again here and there.
Much of that is because it is sometimes difficult to find food that doesn’t have wheat in it. Turkey is one of those places. Their diet is very rich with bread and pastries, so it is difficult here. However, I find that I am okay with it once in a while, as long as I’m not eating it all the time and every day.
Stopping for a pide once in a while is a big treat and a sacrifice that I am willing to make!
To learn more about pides, The Turkish Foodie has a great post.
After writing my last food post Istanbul Has Mountains of Cheese and Olives, I have been surprised by the response. In fact, Yana Bostongirl told me to share a picture of the pides, as she claimed that she wanted to see what they look like. So here you go Yana and thank you for the inspiration!
I’m realizing that as humans we are all, to an extent, interested in food. So, I will continue to share our experiences with interesting and unique food that we encounter around the world! I have even started a list where I will place all of my food and drink-related content.
Did you know that you can follow a list?
Thanks for reading and happy eating:)
