Writing Challenge | Prompt

A Summer Without End

Why are all these writing prompts about summer?

Image by Yassine Noamani from Pixabay

I know I am not the first person ever to have said, “I can’t get this stupid song out of my head” They lyrics bounce around and bother my brain Not sure whether they are the chorus, verse or refrain

But what makes this song a particular bummer Is that it is about my favorite season; summer But not in a positive uplifting sense It’s a song about love, with a negative pretense

For Sadness is the theme of the tune And it reminds me how summer will be over soon Even when they play it at the beginning of the year It invades my thoughts and reminds that the end of summer is near

For everything, it seems, must have a season And while, for many, that seems to be within reason The young at heart of us long for a never-ending time When no responsibility weighs down, and we are still in our prime

And if not for people like Lana Del Ray Who write songs and remind us, much to our dismay That all things must end, we have to move on Nothing is permanent, and one day we’ll be gone

We could live forever in perpetual summertime bliss Cavort, play, dally and fondly reminisce Of all the great time we had with our friends If only, if only, summertime would never end

If only, if only…

Thanks to Sherry McGuinn for this prompt, and please excuse my tardiness in reply. I suppose if we never went anywhere on the weekend that it would be easier to keep up with writing prompts. But what would be the fun in that?

I had already written two poems with summer as a theme.

And

But technically, they were before Sherry issued this challenge, so I couldn’t really say in good conscience that either was in answer to her prompt, so I went on and made up this one.

If you didn’t catch it (or maybe didn’t care) the song in question is “Summertime Sadness” by Lana Del Ray:

In actuality, the lyrics within, while a credible earworm of their own, aren’t the complete impetus for this poem. Rather the Chainsmoker’s song “Selfie” has lyrics that reference Lana Del Ray’s song and those pop to mind more frequently, “Why does the DJ keep playing Summertime Sadness? It’s not even summer!”

But as I was poeming along, I couldn’t quite navigate in that direction and I thought this one turned out as sort of a sweet little ode to seasons. So, there you have it.

I saw Joe Luca’s offering here:

And P.G. Barnett:

And here is Sherry McGuinn‘s origination post:

For the rest of the tagees: Gurpreet Dhariwal, Caroline de Braganza, Denise Shelton, Dawn Bevier, Chris Hedges

I haven’t seen yours yet (or missed it). What’ve you got?

If you like this, you might like some of my other writing:
