Summary

The author reflects on the diversity of friendships using the metaphor of various types of milk, likening their own friendships to non-dairy, specialized milk varieties due to their unique, sensitive nature.

Abstract

The author begins by acknowledging an intolerance to dairy milk, drawing a parallel between their preference for coffee without milk and an acceptance of non-traditional relationships in their life. They describe discovering different types of milk, such as almond, soya, and oat, which resonate with their personal needs, much like the unconventional friendships they've formed. These relationships are described as atypical, often labeled as "weird" or "misfits," but the author is comfortable with this identity. They see themselves as a "special kind" of person, akin to a tailor-made milk for sensitive stomachs and vegan types, suggesting that their friendships cater to those with similar sensitive and unique dispositions. The author expresses gratitude for their self-acceptance and the ability to connect with like-minded individuals, inspired by a poetry prompt from Pretheesh Presannan and initiated by Lucy Dan 蛋小姐.

A Special Kind

Poetry prompt response: if your friendships were types of milk, what kind of milk would they be?

Whether fresh from a farm Or processed industrially – dairy milk, I cannot have I like my coffee black Why wouldn’t I, never tried otherwise.

Discovered several other types of milk later on From almond, to soya, oat, and so on And they all agreed with my stomach too.

This made me realize There is always something out there for everyone All you need is an open mind And you may find that it’s staring at you in the eye.

Perhaps this relates to the relationships I have Atypical, skewed away from the mean Some simply call us weird, misfits maybe.

I am a sensitive kind of person The type that comes with a warning — “Fragile, handle with delicate caring hands” Preferably tailor fitted to wrap around. The type that feels like a unique strand that’s just for me And others alike.

I embrace my tag, Perhaps a bit different from most But I don’t mind. I guess I’m like milk in that regard But not the average, the special kind You know the variety, that’s tailormade For sensitive stomachs and vegan types.

I am comfortable with who I am For I know others alike will find me.

Thank you for reading, I wrote this in response to Pretheesh Presannan, the prompt was initiated by Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她). Thanks to both Pretheesh and Lucy 😊.
