Summary

The website content discusses a poetry prompt inspired by Dennett that uses the metaphor of milk to describe the nature and varying durations of friendships, encouraging reflection on the types of friendships one has.

Abstract

The article titled "Friendship Milk" introduces a creative writing prompt that likens friendships to different types of milk, suggesting that like milk, friendships can have varying lifespans and purposes. Some are akin to fresh milk, best enjoyed immediately, while others, like aged cheese, become more valuable over time. The piece encourages readers to consider their friendships in this light, questioning whether they are like milk that can be stored for a long time or like milk that spoils quickly. The prompt is credited to Dennett and is presented as a way to help individuals process and set boundaries in their relationships. The article also provides instructions on how to participate by tagging others and including the original post. It concludes by acknowledging the personal impact of this analogy on Lucy Dan, who found it useful in navigating her own friendships.

Friendship Milk

Poetry Prompt inspired by Dennett

friendships are like milk at times they last longer, forming cheeses and other delicacies ready for cooking;

yet others delicious when fresh though rotting quickly

they each serve their own purpose for different contexts so let us not cry over spilled milk or milk past their expiry date.

Tagging: Dr. Fatima Imam | Veronica Georgieva | Anuradha Wickramarachchi | Amy Marley | Jessie London if you’re up to it and anyone else interested in today’s prompt: if your friendships were types of milk, what kind of milk would the be?

How to join: include the original post of the person who tagged you for reference and tag 5–10 other people (or simply ‘tag all’) who might be interested in this prompt! (Ps, there’s no deadline!)

Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) wants to thank Dennett for this idea because not only did this make for an interesting poem prompt, but it’s really helped her get through growing out of a series of friendships and delineating new boundaries on time and energy spent with each. The milk analogy worked really well. 🥛
