A Quick NewsBreak Update

For those considering heading over, or wondering about the comparison to Medium

Photo by Markus Winkler on Unsplash

Nearly two months ago now, I wrote expressing sadness that I hadn’t heard about NewsBreak sooner. Only a week later, I wrote that my earnings were decent, but my time there would likely be short-lived after NewsBreak changed their policies.

It turns out I’m still able to write for NewsBreak, but their new policy has really impacted my earnings. In November I earned almost the exact same on both platforms, averaging $5.46 per day on NewsBreak, and $5.38 on Medium.

December is nearly over, and my NewsBreak earnings have fallen to $2.49 per day, whereas my Medium earnings have increased slightly to $6.13 per day.

The comments don’t make sense

Tell me you didn’t read the article without actually telling me you didn’t read the article.

The comments I’ve received on Medium have been 99% positive, and when they haven’t been positive, they’ve at least been relevant and thought out.

The comments I receive on NewsBreak (NB) are at least 90% negative, many are hurtful, some have even been downright hateful, and I don’t often write about highly controversial topics.

Most of those comments clearly demonstrate the person disagreed with the headline, commented without reading, and never looked back.

I usually ignore them, but there were a couple that used slurs which I had to delete. Here are some of the milder comments on a post explaining the neurodiversity paradigm:

Exhibit A, evidence of why “avoid the comments section” is sage advice — (screen shot supplied by author)

I guess I shouldn’t have phrased the heading in the form of a question, inviting people to give their own answers… NB readers are not known for nuance, nor understanding rhetorical questions.

I do enjoy discourse. I’ve seen comments and articles on Medium that disagreed with mine in their theories, interpretations, or opinions. When they’re well-written and well thought out, I genuinely enjoy reading them, and often learn something from them.

I’ve also received constructive criticism from editors here that helped me improve my writing, which I gladly welcome. Not so from NB.

While both platforms obviously profit off their writers, it seems to be that NB is trying to get DIY journalists to provide almost-free news, where at least Medium is supporting writers (sort of), and providing a community for us.

Whatever platform you prefer, do what works best for you. I’ll still post on NB to earn a few dollars, but I certainly won’t be giving it the same effort for such little return. Medium doesn’t give a high return on effort either, but at least it offers community.

Thanks to my fellow writers, editors, and readers for making this a welcoming place for writers to grow.
