A Powerful Way to Get What You Want — Just Ask
This summer, I did a challenge — I tried to get myself rejected every day, for 10 days (inspired by Jia Jiang).
To push myself outside my comfort zone, I asked strangers for a lot of strange things — like free hotel rooms and Shawarma refills.
To my surprise, many of them said Yes.
Sadly, I couldn’t get a free hotel room or $100 or the chance to speak on Air Canada’s intercom, but here’s what I got to do…
- Driving a tourist boat carrying 50 people in Newfoundland (without a license — but under control, don’t worry)
- “Refilling” my Shawarma for free at the local restaurant
- Getting driven by a stranger to the farmer’s market in St. John (thanks for getting us there before they closed, Gary)
- Collecting donations from a hand full of strangers for a local charity — Tiny Home Takeout
… just by asking.
I stopped my experiment after 10 days — to give the poor strangers a well-deserved break ^-^
However, I took away something that helped me secure many greater opportunities later on — that sometimes all it takes for us to get what we want is asking.
That’s why I wanted to share this experience with you.
If you want something, just ask for it.
If I learned one thing from this experiment, it is that people are a lot more willing to say yes than we might think.
People want to help us, they’re not predators trying to hunt us down.
By the simple act of asking, we’re opening ourselves up to a vast possibility of meaningful connections — whether that’s with life-changing experiences, relationships, or opportunities.
What this means for you
Next time you come across something you want, someone you want to get to know, or an opportunity you want to get on, I hope these words will click in the back of your mind, and you’ll put any fear aside and just ask for it.
I guarantee that if you keep doing this, you’ll never run out of exciting opportunities.
Ask, and you’ll be surprised by the number of Yeses you get.
