A Positive Mindset for Chore Lists!

Simple ideas for better results with your daily to-do lists.

Though it’s not always crucial to finish a daily chore list, it can be frustrating not to complete it all, especially if it happens often. A shift to an optimistic mindset can help overcome some of the frustration.

First, let’s envision a scenario with an incomplete list:

~ Hour by hour, the day goes by, and you review your tasks. Where did the time go? The list is about a quarter done. What happened? You ask yourself more questions like, “Did I have too much on my list?” … “Was I slacking?” …. and so on. Aggravated, disappointed, you go to bed and hope tomorrow brings better results. Maybe you’ll find more time then, or sadly, sometimes another unsuccessful day occurs. ~ (Okay, perhaps a little dramatic, but sometimes I feel this way).

Now consider a mindset shift:

How about choosing positivity and remaining okay with the day’s results, even if it didn’t end as planned? A calm attitude about our accomplishments seems in our best interests. It’s not the end of the world if everything isn’t finished. Smile through the ups and get through the downs in life the best you can.

I’m certainly not encouraging avoiding responsibilities here, but pointing out there’s a lot to taking care of ourselves, our family, and daily duties. Easing up on ourselves can’t hurt. It could even help with relaxation and give us the energy to move forward.

Here are some simple steps and reminders to help develop a more positive attitude for your daily tasks:

  1. Review with optimism: It can be helpful to review your chores and search for some that are possibly easier than you initially thought. For example, ‘sort through the bathroom storage cupboard’ was on my list for days, and I thought it would be time-consuming. When the sorting was finished, surprisingly, it took just about 10 minutes. I could have avoided the stress of feeling the project was lengthy. Give yourself a chance, keep a positive attitude, and you may get some good results!
  2. Remain optimistic and patient as better times are ahead: Place priorities at the top of the to-do list and do your best to at least get those done. BUT if not, keep a little faith for a more productive tomorrow.
  3. Get some colorful artwork! Fun colors can cheer us up: A couple of new pillows in your favorite colors might help with motivation. Or one of those pretty painted wooden signs or plaques with an inspirational quote. Paint it yourself! ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff’ might be good wording for a helpful reminder! For a while, those were popular in home decor stores. I’ve been minimal these days, so I have shed some of my decor, but may have had something similar at one point!
  4. For common household chores, pair with small daily tasks. An example: ~ The mess left on the counters from the morning rush earlier allows an opportunity for pairing. When you’re home later and straighten up, clean the sinks at that time too. The house will be neater than it was that morning, and you’ll have clean sinks too. Reward your efficiency and grab your book, read and relax!

Whether it’s an incomplete list or task or simply feeling unhappy about your day, allowing time to rest is always an option. And tomorrow is another day! My good friend always reminds me of that phrase, “What a difference a day makes.” So true!

If the day was not the greatest, be thankful it’s over. Laugh a little and live your best life! Tomorrow could be a game-changer, just the day you’ve been waiting for!
