A Look Back At My Medium Writing in 2022

Going viral, writing about writing and walking down memory lane

As 2022 is winding down, I’m spending some time reviewing my work this year and mining it for inspiration in 2023.

It’s a good time to take a look back, evaluate what worked, what I enjoyed writing, and what I learned from it.

Glancing through my backlog of stories there are several distinct types of stories that stand out.

Stories that Went Viral

I had 3 stories that went viral this year with mostly external views. And no, I didn’t get rich, but I did learn something really important.

Medium’s Domain Authority is huge and you can score big on Google with a good topic and headline. And this gives you a big advantage to engage a wider audience.

My story in Feb 2022 on how to keep an idea diary using the Notes App on my iPhone got 1.2K views.

This story evolved from a short post I published that initially generated some likes on Facebook. So I decided to update and publish it on Medium in Feb 2022 — and it went viral almost immediately.

This response validated that I did have a good sense about what to write about and that Medium was a great place to explore and experiment with different topics.

I also hit 1.2K views writing about Emmanuel the Emu, who became a TikTok sensation in July 2022. This was something fun I enjoyed and thought others would too.

And finally the biggest viral success (4.5K views) was writing about Elton John’s Farewell Concert at Dodger’s Stadium in Nov 2022.

I wrote a lot about writing and Medium this year. I learned so much about myself as a writer in 2022 and wanted to share it with other writers to encourage and help them too.

I was excited to receive 2K claps and lots of comments on my article about how to write roundup stories.

I also received 1.1K claps on how to build a following by commenting and responding to stories on Medium.

Writing Down the Memories

I love writing stories about my memories. It’s a blessing to remember and relive the good times in my life and share them with others.

One of my favorites was about my parents and their Jersey Shore romance.

And another was my childhood memories of my grandparents’ summer boathouse at the Jersey shore.

Key Message: I want to continue to write on a variety of topics and I don’t want to limit myself. I want to forge my own path and see where it takes me. I want to write fearlessly and with joy. And I’m excited for the possibilities in 2023!
