2022 Is the Year I Found My Joy of Writing Again

And suddenly you know. It’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings. — Meister Eckhart

2022 was a huge breakthrough year for me. It’s the year I finally started writing with joy again.

It happened like most breakthroughs do — with a huge leap of faith. I’d been sitting comfortably on the sidelines enjoying reading other writer’s stories on Medium and playing it safe for a long, long time.

But reading about Kristina God’s Medium Bootcamp class in January 2022 stirred something deep inside me and I decided to stop waiting and go all in on my writing dreams and make something happen NOW!

One little conversation with Kristina made all the difference. She reminded me that I do have so much to share and write about and inspired me to adopt the mantra — “Help one person with my writing every day.”

This advice broke open something powerful inside me. I stopped procrastinating and started writing again. In January 2022 I had written 0 stories on Medium. But starting in February 2022, I’ve written 117 stories so far this year. And there’s so much more to come.

I’ve learned so much over the past year on my joyful writing journey.

Here’s 10 of my most important lessons learned.

  1. Make writing a #1 priority in your life. No more excuses. Just write.
  2. It’s never too late to start writing. You can begin whenever you want.
  3. Being part of a supportive community of writers is a must! No writer can do it alone. And Medium is the perfect place to build and nurture relationships with other writers.
  4. Inspiration is everywhere. You only need to open your eyes and see it.
  5. Creativity lives in all of us. Tap into yours. Just let the genie out of the bottle and let it breathe.
  6. Stop listening to your inner critic and give yourself permission to write whatever you want.
  7. Working with other writers as an Editor for Midform reminded me how much I enjoy and learn from the editing process.
  8. Writing down your memories helps you honor the past and reminds you of where you came from and guides your path forward.
  9. Ignore the critics who want to silence you and feel powerful at your expense. Just keep writing anyway.
  10. Learn to trust your gut about your writing ideas. If the idea scares you, it’s definitely worth the risk of writing about it.

In the past I would reflect, lament and beat myself up for another year gone by without writing. But not this year! And I’m so excited to write even more in 2023. Next goal, write a book!

Key Message: Writing is a privilege and a gift. Don’t waste another minute of your wild and precious life hiding your talent.
