A Hidden Gem For Medium Readers

How to find the Medium-run Collections and Anthologies

In November 2018, when I found Medium, through a writer sharing their story in a Facebook group, I was immediately hooked. I was hooked because I LOVE reading.

The Medium-run Publications, like One Zero, Elemental, and Human Parts got me in, as well as the Anthologies and Collections that were promoted then.

At that time, the Medium-run Publications were heavily promoted, with links to these publications at the top of your Medium homepage.

Stories in these Publications regularly appeared in the hallowed “top section” or featured section on the Medium homepage, as shown above. But sometime in 2020 Medium removed these links to their Publications.

There was also an “innocent looking” link to Medium’s Anthologies and Collections half-way down the homepage.

In between the top section and the bottom section of the Medium homepage were words something like “Read more — collections from Medium.”

Some people didn’t notice that this phrase was a hypertext link, but of course, with my attention to detail, I did, much to my happiness. 😄

To this day, I love the Series, Anthologies, and Collections which the Medium staff produce or edit. Medium employed writers to write the articles, and/or some Medium employees may have written articles in some of these publications.

Some of the articles in these publication types have audios of the content, such as stories in “Notes on Changing Your Life.”

One day, out of the blue, the link to the aforementioned, disappeared from the homepage. Not to be put off by this, I did a google search of “Medium collections” to find that they are still available, to my relief.

Medium had best not remove them, or else — — I will not be happy! Here is a direct link to the Anthologies, Columns, Series, and Collections of Medium; even if they are no longer active!

As reported in the story below, written when I first joined Medium, it was like being in Heaven for me, finding the above publications, to read to my heart’s content. I especially like the collections by Nautilis, a science magazine. 🐠

I guess that Medium is not making these easily available or known to the public because they haven’t been updated, but I hope that Ev Williams leaves the Publications on the internet.

They are a treasure trove of educational, factual, debatable, interesting, fun, and experiential information, in my opinion! Even if the articles in them are dated, some of the content is still useful and relevant. 😆

I even submitted a story titled “For the Record: I am a Big Little Person” to “For the Record” early in 2019.

This was back in those days, when these Publications were active, and one of the Member Partner Program Emails stated that the Editor of “For the Record” was calling for ordinary Medium writers to pitch to them. The stories submitted were to be about stigmas, and I thought that my experience of the often unacknowledged “stigma” around small people, was suitable.

BUT, for the record, my story about being small and overlooked, was NOT accepted by the Editor. I don’t know why as I didn’t get feedback.

We can only guess when our content is rejected, so in this case I wondered if my article was too focused upon myself, without an amazing thousand-dollar worth “Take Away” for the average reader! Though obviously the take-away was for people not to brand small people as being lesser. 😲

Not to worry, because in my record book, everyone who writes on Medium is amazing. And although I do have my favourite individual writers whose stories I like to read, I do relish the Publications run by Medium.

Even if Medium is now focusing more on writers than on Publications, and has gone from one extreme to another; i.e. from pushing their own Publications to obscuring them from new members, I will always appreciate and read stories in all the types of Medium-run Publications.

Brinda Koushik says that Medium wasn’t getting enough R.O.I. or Return On Investment with the money it was spending on Editors for some of its Medium-run Publications. I am surprised at that, but happy and grateful that the major Medium-run Publications, like One Zero, are still active.
