Medium’s Editorial Team Asked to Quit — Why You Don’t Have to Panic

What it simply means for writers, publication owners, and readers

Image (Medium Home page and founder Ev Williams) created by Author using Canva

The article I’m talking about is Medium Editorial Team Update, which states that Ev Williams, founder of Medium has asked editors of Medium-owned publications to take a voluntary exit (Voluntary separation program) from Medium with a five-month severance package including medical coverage for six months.

The article has created a flurry of jumped-on-my-toe reactions from writers, publication owners, and readers. I understand from an editor’s perspective it is lethal. But that’s how a business works.

From a writer, reader, and publication owner’s standpoint, it’s important to understand Medium’s decision as any business owner’s decision is to pivot to where they can achieve better profits. Publications are here to stay as they align to the relational model of Medium.

What’s the relational model, Medium is talking about?

Medium’s relational model framework is to showcase the pattern in your writings to your potential readers. If you’re writing only technical articles, people seeking tech updates in your area of expertise are going to be funneled toward you. If you’re writing about current trends, history, or poetry, your target audience will be sent to you over time and they build up and help you grow your perfect audience.

Your stories connect to each other like chapters of a book once you align your writings to a specific niche (or niches). So your audience can consume your stories like they devour a book, chapter by chapter.

Ignore the gossip that — relational model is to reply to every comment on your story to build a relationship with your reader. It sure is great if you do that but if you don’t you’ll still do ok.

Medium’s first inhouse publication ‘OneZero’ launched two years ago and within the next nine months, they started seven magazine-style pubs(Zora, Level, Elemental, Forge, Human Parts, Tenderly, GEN) that saw decent success.

The articles from Medium’s publications were on everyone’s Medium home page in a bid to promote them. But in my opinion, people lacked a connection with the Medium-owned publications because getting featured in them was difficult and many felt it’s reserved for extremely good writers or top authors with a following in that niche.

Medium’s publications enjoyed an 80 member editorial team and they managed to push out several masterpieces that did extremely well. But the end ROI of the publications wasn’t good enough to support all the editorial members and looks like it turned out burdensome for Medium. Ev Williams said “Medium is going to strategically shift its editorial team to support independent voices on the platform.” which is good news if you ask me.

This means identifying writers — both already on Medium and not — and offering them deals, support, editing, and feedback to help them tell great stories and find their audience. — Ev Williams

About their own publications, Williams said he’s not going to shy away from experimenting more to figure out how to optimize their usage. There is also a shake-up in the top organization. Siobhan O’Connor, the editorial Senior VP is stepping down soon, handing the reins of Medium’s content organization to Jermaine Hall and Scott who’d report to Karene [Tropen], the new SVP Marketing & Content of Medium.

Like any business, Medium has to adapt and tweak its model based on the volatile market scene for content-based platforms. But Medium is by far a steady business that supports writers big and small and I am thankful for it. His article in no way even remotely seems like a bomb to writers, publication owners, or readers. I wanted to write this to clear any mist from your glasses. Write on…
