THERE IS POWER IN NUMBERS — WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH THIS POWER?

A Grand Life

The power of the written word

Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

I found you pressed in the pages of a book like last summer’s rose, preserved for eternity. I found you on the screen, colder than print, but more available than a closeted sweater. I found you in my earbuds, speaking in accents that romanticized everything you read.

I found you in the power of the written word, all of you and all your histories and dreams, disappointments and achievements. I found you being born, giving birth, and dying, I laughed and wept and knew you.

My world is small but my life is grand because you come to me in many forms, telling your stories, reminding me I am part of a community much bigger than my physical address, I am here but I am also with you wherever you are.

My body will never be on the Great Wall of China, sipping wine in Bologna, listening to bagpipes in Glascow, or floating down the Danube on an autumn day, but my mind will be in all those spots and more, for the world is mine, one page at a time.

In a world that appears to be more ignorant each day, in a world where knowledge is vilified and opinions are magnified, in a world where truth is suspect and lies are glorified, I still believe in the power of words, books, and education.

Read to your children. Carry a book wherever you go. Support libraries. Embrace the humanities because they teach us to be human. Get educated. Teach others. Write whenever you can. If you can’t go, read.

The world really is at your fingertips. Explore. Learn. Grow.
