Summary

In a fantasy setting, the characters Pike, Diera, and Viper seek assistance from an irritable Arakocra to locate someone named Charity.

Abstract

The narrative titled "A Friend in Need" is part of a fantasy drabble series called "Searching for Charity." It follows the trio of Pike, Diera, and Viper as they confront an Arakocra, a bird-like humanoid, in hopes of gaining information about Charity's whereabouts. The Arakocra, easily provoked, takes offense at Viper's mockery, leading to a tense standoff. Pike attempts to defuse the situation by reminding the Arakocra of a past debt, while Diera's unease grows. The story is inspired by a writing challenge and prompts from other authors, aiming to explore the dynamics of three criminals working together to save a life.

Opinions

  • The Arakocra's sensitivity to insults is a central character trait that creates tension.
  • Pike's diplomatic approach suggests a history and understanding of the Arakocra's temperament.
  • Viper's mockery indicates a lack of concern for the group's precarious situation or a strategy to manipulate the Arakocra.
  • Diera's apprehension and physical reaction to the conflict hint at her character's vulnerability or inexperience in such confrontations.
  • The story's inspiration from writing prompts reflects a meta-narrative about the creative process and authorial collaboration.

“Pike! Never a pleasure to see you.”

“Ruawk,” Pike replied to the Arakocra, a humanoid bird.

“Who’s the cuckoo?” Viper mocked.

“How dare you!”

Ruawk spread his wings and tapped the floor with his talons.

Diera took a cautious step back.

“She’s with us,” Pike winced at Viper, “Don’t get your feathers ruffled.”

The Arakocra’s caw sounded like something between hawk and chicken.

“When stressed, he does sound like a chicken!”

Diera took another step back.

“Outrages! I will ….”

“Tell us where Charity is?” Pike suggested.

“No way!”

“You ow me. I nearly died.”

Unnoticed, Diera started to tremble.

JF Danskin’s “A Drabble Challenge for Authors” challenge inspired my drabble short story “Searching for Charity.” Some additional inspiration came from Christine Gravesprompt, …

Write about three criminals who have to work as a team to save someone’s life.

… and a prompt by JF Danskin.

Introduce a character who blows up at the smallest insult or slight. Perhaps they are someone that the main character needs help from, or needs to interview about a crime. Write a scene showing how touchy this person can be.
