WRITING PROMPTS
A Drabble a Day Writing Prompts
Let’s play a game!
Hello, fellow word lovers, my name is Grim Flandango. Not that long ago, I had an idea. Unlike most of my ideas, this one in no way featured dressing penguins up in little gladiator outfits and trying to train them to fight to the death.
I was looking for a way to ensure that I wrote every day. For me, it was an exercise I very much wanted to complete in the morning. I always feel better when I do a spot of writing first thing. It’s like taking the time to stretch your mind for the day.
And so, I started experimenting with a way to get in that morning stretch. I have participated in morning prompts in the past, so my ideas weren’t original, but in this time and place it felt right for me.
It’s since been suggested by JF Danskin that others might want to join me in my game. I love that idea. I love building community, and I’d love to see more of it. So, here it is — the game as I play, and the rules I use.
Rules
- Every day there is a word. I use a random word generator for that word.
- I then write a drabble that, in some way, features the word. (Because it’s a drabble, I keep it to 100 words exactly for the challenge.)
- Those 100 words don’t include whatever introduction you might have, or promotional blurb. It only includes the story itself.
- Obviously, the only other rule is that you stick to the submission guidelines for the publication you are submitting to. I am submitting to The Fiction Writer’s Den, so I keep to their rules.
- When you do publish, make sure to tag me. I really want to read what you’ve done.
Here are a couple of examples I’ve done.
Every week I will put out the words for the following week, running Monday through Sunday. That was you can do them at a time that most works for you.
So, take my hand, join me. Together, let’s get really weird with it.
This week’s words:
1/1 Monday- CHISEL
1/2 Tuesday- FIZZ
1/3 Wednesday- INJURY
1/4 Thursday- TIDE
1/5 Friday- PARENT
1/6 Saturday- MOVIE
1/7 Sunday- PHOTOSYNTHESIS
I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
