A Calming Cave Visualization to Decrease Stress

The benefits are numerous, but seeing is believing

When I was a child, I had a near-daily ritual where I would sprint down the grassy, green hills toward the muddy tunnels that snaked their way under the highway by my house. The tunnels led to the ultimate destination, a partially submerged cave lined with gooey mud and carefully molded bee nests. This was a magical place. A peaceful place. A safe space. I’d spend many hours gazing out at the streams of iridescent light that flowed from the entrance.

I didn’t grow out of my love for exploring wild places, caves included. It is my dream to swim to an underwater cave where I would gracefully and bravely submerge myself and reemerge again in a place that time forgot, a place of otherworldly beauty, filled with limestone stalactites, shimmering crystals, and undiscovered treasures—a lake of albino fish or a strikingly sublime colony of inky-black bats.

That primal feeling of being encased by the earth and the resulting rush that you get from exploring something possibly unchartered is an experience like no other.

So, I created a peaceful cave visualization that can inspire peace and serenity wherever we may be.

The Benefits of Visualization

Visualization is the practice of using peaceful images to promote a relaxed state of mind. The technique itself is simple, effective, and accessible, and quite helpful for reducing daily stress and tension.

Creative visualization is a powerful practice because where the mind goes, the body will follow. The only limits are what you can conjure up in your mind, and for that, there is no limit.

Scientific studies have shown the positive effects of creative visualization on health, such as immunity, stress, healing, and pain management. Science also shows that visualization improves many facets of life, from athletic ability to cognitive performance, to self-esteem, to goal achievement.

Visualization techniques may also aid in the attainment of higher states of consciousness. Whatever you need, whatever you do, or whatever your abilities, visualization will help.

Calming Cave Visualization

First, here is a music track to accompany the below visualization:

The beauty of this practice is that you can personalize your visualization to suit any mood or preference. Whatever fills you with peace, go with that.

The practice

  • Begin by quieting your mind and allow your body to become very still. Close your eyes and begin to go within.
  • There is nothing to focus on, nothing to worry about. Sit with this peaceful stillness.
  • Next, breathe deeply a few times to prepare yourself for the visualization journey.
  • Each time you inhale, think I am inhaling love, and exhaling peace. Do this 3 -5 times.
  • Inhale love, exhale peace. Inhale love, exhale peace. Inhale love, exhale peace.
  • Slowly you see yourself standing in the middle of a cave.

  • Take a moment to smell the fragrant damp earth and feel the surrounding dampness. It’s pitch dark.
  • Listen to the melodious drip of water in the distance. Hear the gentle flow of unseen water.
  • Open your eyes and take a moment to adjust to the darkness. Then take a second to feel the sensation of being completely surrounded by the weight of the cave. Inhale love, exhale peace.

  • Then notice a thin ribbon of light streaming down from the sky like a brilliant river of glistening stillness.

  • You happen to glance up and see a hole in the cave and, through it, a beautiful matrix of stars shining down light like a majestic blanket of pure serenity.
Shutterstock ID: 11074858933
  • You say the word “peace,” either out loud or silently, and feel this peace bathe you in warm light as you realize this peace has been in you all along, and that you can access it at any time by visualizing your cave. As you do this, you start to forget where the cave starts and where you begin. You are one with the earth. There is no separation. You are one and the same.
Shutterstock ID: 235321609
  • Stand or sit in this cave for as long as you’d like. When you are ready, slowly come back from the visualization by noticing how your hands feel, followed by your feet, shoulders, and heart.

Try adding this calming visualization to your anti-stress toolkit, and for even more stress-relief, commit to practicing daily. This could be in the morning and at night, during traffic lulls, before an important meeting, or whatever works for you and your lifestyle.

The more that your brain is trained and primed to use visualization as a stress defense, the easier it will be to call on a peaceful, positive state of mind whenever you’d like.
