Summary

The article discusses the problem of package theft by porch pirates and proposes returning to the pre-pandemic method of package delivery with notification slips, supplemented by modern technology such as email or text notifications, to ensure secure delivery.

Abstract

The author reflects on the issue of porch piracy, where packages left unattended on doorsteps are stolen. The article contrasts the pre-pandemic delivery method, where delivery personnel would leave a notice for package pickup, with the current situation where packages are often left exposed. The author suggests that while the shift during the pandemic may be due to environmental concerns or company policies, the rise in theft warrants a reevaluation of these practices. To combat package theft, the author recommends a hybrid approach: reinstating the practice of leaving pickup notices while also leveraging technology to send email or text alerts, and providing options for customers to retrieve their packages from secure locations.

A Better Way to Get Rid of Porch Pirates.

Maybe get back to the old way of delivering or use something more technological.

You ordered a package online. Weeks later, it does arrive, but you are either at work or doing errands. The delivery person leaves the box outside on your front porch. Then a stranger comes to steal the package that you spent money on. If you have a security camera, you find out that a Porch Pirate came to your door. If you don’t have one, you contacted the company a week later and found out that your package was delivered.

Before the Pandemic

Years ago, I was living on my own in an apartment complex. If the delivery person came and I was at work, they left a slip of paper on my door or mail box letting me know where to pick it up. I loved that idea. That way, you don’t get porch pirates. The only downside to it was that some of the delivery companies in my area are only open when I am at work. It happened a few times. But I have gotten a few notices to go to the post office to pick the boxes up. I love that idea. I thought that we didn’t get Porch Pirates in Canada.

Since the Pandemic.

I don’t know if it results from what is happening or delivery companies want to be environmentally friendly. But I have noticed a lot of delivery people just leaving packages on our doorsteps. And the reason why people go and steal their neighbor’s boxes.

A Solution to this problem.

Let us go back to delivery people leaving notices on our front door. I don’t mind picking it up at a more secure location like the post office or package facility.

But then again, I think that all delivery companies are trying to cut back on the amount of paper. So why not leave us an email or a text message. Or even leave a message to call back and know that our packaged items are in the storage.

To me, these ideas are a better way to get rid of Porch Pirates. Let the person who ordered these packages get it. What do you think?
