How to apply : The Theory of Multiple Intelligences

There are some specific qualities that you need to explore and even master as part of your daily personal growth routine.

This is how one can more easily live effectively in the world, no matter what the environment or circumstances. So with this as a guiding principle, let’s explore in greater depth a concept I call “Understanding.”

It is deeply influenced by The Theory of Multiple Intelligences. This theory proposes the differentiation of human intelligence into specific intelligence, rather than defining intelligence as a single, general ability. I often wonder how the new A.I.-based systems might help define which Understandings reflect our strengths.

Here are some of the “Intelligences” described in the theory. These are the 7 Tips Concerning Spiritually Based Businesses in a Global Economy

1. Logical-mathematical Understanding: This is an intellectual Understanding of the application of and limitations of logical reasoning. Here, you understand abstract patterns, scientific thinking, investigations, and the performance of complex calculations.
2. Spatial Understanding: This type of Understanding is a core tool for Introspective meditation, especially Creative Visual Meditation. Spatial Understanding is core to the creative process and the creation and appreciation of art. With this Understanding, you can easily recognize the common patterns that others do not see. Thus, you become highly skilled in problem-solving, solving puzzles, and what is known among architects and those dealing with highly complex non-linear problems as pattern language. With an Understanding of pattern language, many of the paradoxes in kōans will become clear.
3. Linguistic Understanding: This is the Understanding of how a mastery of spoken or written words can be a source of inner wisdom and spiritual clarity. This understanding is expressed in reading and writing, telling stories, and remembering details, especially those involving dates. You may master this form of Understanding by reading, taking notes, listening to discourses, and discussing and debating about what you have learned. This form of Understanding without also having clarity of Bodily-kinesthetic Understanding will often limit you. With verbal skills, it is also important to gain skills in reading non-verbal cues and body language. The cost of not mastering non-verbal communication is that you master words and yet misunderstand what is being communicated.
4. Bodily-kinesthetic Understanding: This means that you have control of your bodily motions and the capacity to handle objects skillfully. This Understanding also includes a sense of timing, physical actions, attention to detail, the ability to train responses so they become like reflexes, and a full capability to give and receive sensual and sexual pleasure. This is the form of understanding applied in many of the martial arts as well as the sexual aspects of the tantric traditions.
5. Auditory Understanding: Here, you have sensitivity to sounds, rhythms, pitch, meter, tone, melody, timbre, and music. Master this and you will listen well and have the ability to gain wisdom from talks, classic spiritually-oriented stories, lectures, and complex or simple conversations. With auditory Understanding, your Wisdom practice will expand through the study of poetry, songs, or rhythms.
6. Interpersonal Understanding: Understanding of how you interact with others. This is an essential Understanding if you are going to integrate the Monastery of the Social Network into your Wisdom Practice. Here, you will become very sensitive to the moods, feelings, temperaments, and motivations of others, as well as their ability to cooperate in a group. The most effective teachers have mastered this subtle Understanding. Through this Understanding, great leaders can stay in the background only acting when needed to create community and rapport among others. In online social networking sites such as Linkedin and Facebook, these are the individuals who form meet-ups or special interest groups.
7. Intrapersonal Understanding: The Practitioner with this Understanding has strong introspective and self-reflective capacities. Here, you will likely be drawn to meditation and visualization more than to the study of kōans. You will be less concerned with transcending the logical mind and more concerned with developing a deep love and understanding of the self. You will want to know what your strengths or weaknesses are, and what makes them unique, and you will soon have the ability to predict and master your reactions and emotions. Philosophical and critical thinking will be important for you, and as you develop a greater mastery of this Understanding, you will be able to explain intellectual points down to the minutia as well as connect to the inner Qi. You will also have the ability to see the humor in all things, laughing and discarding any seemingly logical idea if such logic does not open the door to self-actualization, Divine Realization, and Enlightenment.

An economist is an expert who will know tomorrow why the things he predicted yesterday didn’t happen today.

The Takeaway

On the Wisdom Path, you need not ask “Who is the Master or Sage?” You need only observe who has the Understanding that a Sage would understand.

This wisdom then needs to be applied like a game where the pain of spiritual longing, and the digital and post-digital worlds cross paths. When you look at the screen of a smartphone, what you see are Apps — little icon boxes.

The word “App” is a noun, and it’s short for “application,” short for “software application,” which means a software program used to run a computerized system. This is just the playing field of the game we are all now playing
