Tips On Mindful Business Practices

Why do some of us struggle to get done, what needs to be done?

It seems that some individuals are mentally frozen when confronted with external circumstances that are beyond their control. These individuals feel overwhelmed and may genuinely feel victimized by circumstances. More often than not, they have made some decision that has created the obstacle that they feel imprisoned by.

This happens for many reasons. It may be that they focus on the wrong resources at the wrong time, delegate ineffectively, have poor time management, priority planning or organizational skills, or are attached to some false belief. It may be extreme monkey mind at work. Applying mindfulness will help you to transcend this state of paralysis.

Peak Experience

The Taoist Mystics teach that when you live life in tune with natural law, it is likely that in time you will come face to face with the essence of your authentic self. This primal, authentic self has two seemingly oppositional qualities. First, it exists in a place that is lonely, isolated and private. And second, it is an ecstatic expression of how we are all one — connected to all others through the core reality of what it is to be a human being. At the moment that you integrate these two unique and interconnected states, a breakthrough takes place. What arises is a sense of awe, ecstasy, joy, and wonder — a personal revelation, an illumination. At this moment, you will taste what it is to be self-actualized. At this moment, you will experience overwhelming love and a myriad of positive qualities. This is what is called Wisdom Mind. This is an authentic peak experience. When such an experience takes place, it needs to be experienced as it “Is” without self-congratulation or expectation. When you are in this state, you will have an awareness of some higher truth, a connection with a transcendental unity, and a sense that you can see the world in a way that is humbling, awe-inspiring, subtle, and deeply profound.

There is also a narcissistic element to any spiritually based business practice that reflects a desire to have a peak experience — a state of ecstasy, usually of a transpersonal nature that exudes interconnectedness, unity and harmony.

I call this narcissistic streak a “Pseudo Peak Experience Obsession.”

An authentic peak experience is seldom a spontaneous occurrence. It often arrives through a unique event, circumstance, or occurrence that is built on self-knowledge, consistency of practice, and detachment from the idea of having a peak experience. Very few individuals have a peak experience while remaining unchanged. Often this change becomes life-enhancing and deeply positive. It will likely affect your intellectual view of the world, your attitudes, and how you function emotionally day to day. In the end, the most authentic peak experience in a wisdom business model is to create a useful product or service, offer the best you can, and make a difference in the lives of others while creating some profit.

When you are in alignment with your authentic self and the business vision that flows from that, you will experience a sense of harmony — a softness of spirit and absolute flexibility. This is an authentic peak experience. Whenever you experience unnecessary struggle and resistance in your business life, you can be assured that you have turned your back on your authentic nature and your Wisdom Business Mind.

With this authentic peak experience, one may feel simultaneously more powerful than ever imagined possible and also awestruck and humbled by the magnitude of the experience. You feel more connected to the world, more aware of the unity of all things, and humbled by all of it. To have this experience is to be completely immersed in a state of wonder and ecstasy while at the same moment consciously experiencing the distortion of space and time. What has happened here is that you have shifted into a new sense of reality, a mentally clear and emotionally balanced, proactive reality. In this new reality, you are aware of some higher truth, a connection with transcendental unity, and a sense that you can extraordinarily see the world, in a way that is awe-inspiring, subtle, and deeply profound. With this experience, your sense of reality completely shifts. Business at that point is now not just about selling something, but about service through availability. You become the portal.

I was once told by one of my teachers that for a healthy person to fit into normal society, he or she would have to act as if he or she were crazy in order to appear normal to everyone else.

The writer, SJ Perelman asks, “How does one fit in a world that does not fit us?” In the end, a peak experience shows that what one thought was real is just an illusion. With business wisdom, you can more easily become your authentic self. Here you go from doing business to being service through the business of business.

The Takeaway

So, beware of the pseudo-peak experience and those who worship that in business. It is no more than a hedonistically driven obsession with peak events of short-term pleasure. The consistent focus on “I want this now” and quarterly profits may be the greatest source of unnecessary struggle, suffering, and business failure. Seek to serve and through service gain profit as well. This will bring you love, wisdom, clarity of thought, contentment, and emotional balance.
