Femme fatale translates to “fatal woman” or “deadly woman”.

It describes a woman who is seductive, mysterious and dangerous, leading men into destructive situations and ultimately ruining them. This character type is a common archetype in literature, film, and art, reaching peak popularity in film noirs of the 1940s and 50s. Her fate is often tragic.

A femme fatale is often manipulative, deceptive and morally ambiguous. Her attitude towards sexuality is frivolous and she doesn’t hesitate to use it to ensnare men. She tends to get involved in various criminal activities. She may also be portrayed as a victim, trapped in a difficult situation that she cannot get away from.

1- She’s the epitome of a strong, independent woman.

Femme fatales are usually single as they perceive dependency as a weakness people may use against them. Being controlled is what they hate the most. They value their autonomy — they want to do what they want whenever they want without any restrictions being imposed on their behaviour. Also, because they struggle to trust people, they prefer to be self-reliant and have trouble asking for help.

They have a fear of appearing weak or needy and struggle to form deep bonds with others due to a fear of intimacy. In a relationship, they have the tendency to feel trapped and keep their distance as they need a lot of personal space. They often have many short-term relationships due to their inability to tolerate intimacy. They prefer to spend time alone and they may push people away and become cold without warning or any visible external trigger.

2- She’s promiscuous.

Femme fatales can be captivating and enticing, which makes them intoxicating to those they target. They are not ashamed of their sexuality and do not hesitate to use it to manipulate or control men to get what they want. They often talk about sex as their sexuality is a big part of who they are. They are likely to wear revealing outfits, however, despite their attractive physique their main interest is not sexual; it’s monetary.

Femme fatales’ seductive charm can lead men to make irrational decisions. These characters are portrayed as confident and assertive in their sexuality and having numerous sexual partners, often without any emotional attachment to any of them. In film noir, they are typically punished for their promiscuity through their downfall. They uphold and buttress the patriarchial belief that women’s sexuality can be dangerous.

3- She rejects motherhood.

One of the most common traits of femme fatales is their refusal of the traditional role of motherhood and therefore rejection of conformity. In other words, they reject the role of “the good girl” and “maternal woman”. The traditional family structure is unappealing to them. This is because they prioritise their independence and personal goals. They also have a deep-seated distrust of emotional attachments due to past trauma. They perceive children to restrict and take away one’s freedom and as a result feel that they would be a hindrance to their ambitions.

4- She has a troubled past.

Femme fatales have a chaotic past, which can help observers understand the reasons behind their manipulative or dangerous proclivities. They might not talk about their past often and instead choose to keep it quiet but in film noir, it is often implied that there’s something that went horribly wrong that still haunts them. Here are some of the things they may have experienced in the past:

• Trauma: They may have experienced abuse, which left them with unresolved psychological issues that drive them to seek power and control.
• Betrayal: They may have experienced betrayal from someone they depended on, a friend, a trusted person or a loved one, amplifying their distrust of people and inclination towards manipulation.
• Loss: They may have lost people who are close to them and be after revenge or compensation.
• Personal Tragedy: They have had a difficult upbringing or financial problems which may have led to their willingness to resort to morally ambiguous or criminal behaviour.
• Abandonment: They may have been abandoned by someone they were dependent on or trusted, which could have led them to value self-reliance and autonomy above everything.
• Criminal Background: They may have been born into a criminal family or have a background in criminal activities.

5- She’s morally ambiguous.

Femme fatales tend to operate in grey areas where the line between what’s right or wrong is not always clear. In other words, they are not bound by conventional moral codes. They are often portrayed as manipulative and deceitful. Their lies and scheming may be difficult to notice due to their charm — they are adept at getting people to act against their better judgment by playing on their weaknesses and vulnerabilities. Their behaviour can often be unpredictable and include fraud, treachery, and even murder. The fact that they are willing to betray their loved ones to further their interests makes them unpredictable and potentially deadly.

6- She’s dangerous.

Femme Fatales are adept at manipulating others, particularly men, to achieve their goals. They seek to gain men’s trust and then control over them, leading them into compromising or dangerous situations. They also don’t back down from a fight and aren’t afraid to pursue what they desire. Becoming associated with them ends up ruining or backtracking one’s life, yet even if people are aware that they are potentially bad, their charm and intelligence cause others to want to be in their company.

The mysterious nature of femme fatales adds to the risk of getting involved with them. They are likely to have hidden agendas and ulterior motives that are not clear when you first come in contact with them. What they desire may range from wealth, power, revenge and freedom and they are often willing to go to great lengths to achieve these goals, which makes them dangerous.
