Smoothly Blending Western and Eastern Ways

Despite being a relatively new concept in modern society, holistic health has a long history of use in various cultures, philosophies, and religions. It was also observed in so-called Blue Zones, where people live healthier and longer than in other regions. It gained significant momentum in Europe.

In the mid-1980s, I was drawn to and joined the holistic health journey while suffering from debilitating health issues. My engagement significantly contributed to solving multiple entangled health issues.

I observed a growing interest among scientists and healthcare practitioners over the last three decades. Therefore, I was intrigued by its potential. Over time, holistic health has gained wider acceptance and is almost a mainstream approach to health and wellness in many countries.

Based on current progress and intensive focus by scientists, the public, and governments, I believe it will gain more acceptance in the next decade. Health is all about balance (homeostasis), and holistic health strives for it.

As I frequently mentioned holistic health in my previous articles, I noticed a growing interest among readers who wanted to learn more about this powerful concept.

With this interest in mind, I decided to summarize my research and personal experience, providing an overview of the principles and components of holistic health.

In this post, I will introduce you to the essence of holistic health, emphasizing its fundamental principles, exploring its historical roots, and offering practical examples to illustrate its effectiveness.

Furthermore, I will summarize the findings of recent systemic reviews, providing you with scientific insights into the benefits of incorporating alternative medicine and therapies into your holistic health journey.

Join me on this journey to discover the power of holistic health and learn how to customize its principles to achieve integrative health and wellness.

What does holistic health entail?

Holistic health refers to a comprehensive and integrative approach to preventing and solving health issues and sustainably improving people's well-being. It smoothly blends Western and Eastern approaches.

This approach sees an individual as a whole person covering physical, mental, emotional, social, environmental, and spiritual aspects. The central focus of holistic health is the interconnectedness of multiple facets of humans.

Holistic health aims to prevent illness by promoting wellness with natural approaches and lifestyle adjustments. This approach entailed an individualized approach, as each person is unique and has special requirements.

One of the focus areas of holistic health is the collaborative approach among patients, practitioners, therapists, and healthcare providers.

In addition, holistic health has a multidisciplinary approach aiming to bring solutions from various domains and disciplines, which can bring synergistic solutions.

Holistic health professionals include both physiological and psychological domains. For example, I witnessed medical doctors including positive psychology and alternative therapies incorporating patients’ lifestyles.

There are also emerging medical disciplines such as PNEI (Psychoneuroendocrinoimmunology) covering studies of the intimate relationship between immune, physical, emotional, and psychological aspects, states of consciousness, and chemical mediations to demonstrate their psycho-chemical interdependence.

As documented by this medical doctor, when he was in medical school in 1981, psychoneuroimmunology was not covered. But he started using this holistic approach in 1995. So in a decade, a significant shift happened.

I also see immunotherapy for cancer patients as a holistic approach as it includes multiple strategies such as vaccines, checkpoint inhibitors, T-cell therapies, and other considerations to improve patients' immunity.

Holistic dentistry, following holistic health principles, and believing dental health is connected to overall health, is gaining acceptance by the public.

Longevity clinics also focus on holistic health principles, processes, and tools to extend the health span and life span of their clients.

Even though holistic health primarily focuses on the long-term, it also covers short-term benefits with fundamental lifestyle choices that might bring immediate benefits to people.

For example, holistic health principles highlight the importance of stress management, a nutritious diet, regular exercise, restorative sleep, rest, fun, and social connections in our daily lives.

History of Holistic Health

The holistic health notion has roots in ancient cultures focusing on the healing power of lifestyle habits.

The most prominent cultural implementation of holistic health, as documented in anthropological studies, are traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine of India.

Holistic health gained significant focus after the 19th century due to dissatisfaction with conventional medicine, which had a fragmented view of health conditions.

For example, a holistic biopsychosocial perspective gained momentum in science communities.

In addition, people seeing the value of alternative therapies with freedom of speech movement accelerated the speed of the adaption process. Environmental concerns also played a role.

However, the most significant contribution was made by scientists independently showing the value of holistic approaches adding stress management, nutrition, exercise, sleep, and mindfulness practices. As a result, research in these areas proliferates, strengthening the power of holistic health.

Furthermore, many health organizations and healthcare professionals embraced holistic health in the 20th century, and it gained momentum in the 21st century. Some countries added holistic health to their healthcare agenda and created policies. I will provide some examples in the next section.

A Global Outlook to Holistic Health

Many countries have placed a greater emphasis on holistic health and wellness in recent years as a growing body of research supports the benefits of holistic health practices.

The leading European countries are Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and the United Kingdom. These countries studied the impact of lifestyle habits and complementary and alternative medicine practices, and many healthcare providers and insurance companies offer coverage for these treatments.

Leading Asian countries like Japan, China, India, and South Korea leveraged their traditional healing approach and integrated them into their modern healthcare system.

Other countries like Australia, Canada, Brazil, and the United States also made considerable progress in adding alternative therapies to the healthcare system and integrating them with conventional medicine providing more holistic health opportunities to citizens.

However, in some countries, there are still some concerns with holistic healthcare approaches for various reasons.

The primary concerns are the lack of regulation of alternative therapies, which are prone to economic and political misuse and abuse, inconsistent definitions of alternative approaches, and a higher focus on evidence-based medicine due to a lack of scientific rigor in the impact of lifestyle choices and the effectiveness of alternative therapies.

Principles and Key Components of Holistic Health

The critical principle of holistic health is the mind-body connection. This principle entails physical, emotional, mental, social, environmental, and spiritual aspects of human health for maintaining the homeostasis (balance) of body, mind, and spirit. This principle sees a person from multiple facets and domains.

The second principle of holistic health focuses on preventing illnesses via healthy lifestyle habits, conventional medicine, and alternative therapies. Even though holistic health covers immediate health concerns such as emergencies, the primary focus is proactively preventing emerging incidents.

The third principle of holistic health is an individualized approach. Holistic health accepts people as unique with special needs based on their body, mind profile, and environment. Therefore, treating each person might require a different approach based on age, body type, genetics, sex, and other factors.

Another essential principle of holistic health is the collaborative approach covering conventional and alternative therapies, mainly focusing on lifestyle choices.

In addition to modern medicine, which is mainstream, it also includes lifestyle specialists such as dieticians, nutritionists, sleep experts, sports coaches, psychologists, psychotherapists, hypnotists, acupuncturists, physiotherapists, osteopaths, mindfulness practitioners, many more practitioners, treatment methods, especially for chronic illnesses.

Holistic health pays special attention to lifestyle choices, especially nutrition, sleep, exercise, rest, fun, social connection, relationship improvement, and avoiding harmful substances such as smoking, drug use, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Holistic health also focuses on spirituality to improve mental and emotional health. For example, spiritual and religious practices involving prayer, chanting, and meditation are part of proactive health and well-being improvements.

As stress is the root cause of main ailments, holistic health focuses on proactive stress management. This principle includes lowering stress via healthy lifestyle choices, alternative therapies, conventional therapies, and medications as a last resort.

Holistic health also creates environmental awareness. For example, it encourages us to look after our environment, prevent pollution, use natural cleaning products, eat organic food, and refrain from environmental toxins and pathogens with a proactive and preventative approach.

The Benefits of Incorporating Holistic Health into Your Life

As holistic health considers the interplay of physical, mental, cognitive, emotional, social, environmental, and spiritual aspects of us, it can bring many health and well-being benefits.

Those who embrace and practice holistic health principles can manage stress better, prevent nutritional deficiencies, refrain from sedentary life and harmful materials, and have better relationships.

Combining these factors makes a compound effect, such as improving health, well-being, increased energy, vitality, happiness, spiritual connections, life satisfaction, and potential longevity.

Impact and Implication of Holistic Health

Holistic health matters for individuals, healthcare organizations, governments, and society as we are all connected invisibly as part of collective consciousness.

For individuals, holistic health might lead to better self-awareness, improved physical and mental health, increased energy, enhanced emotional well-being, and a stronger sense of purpose and connection to the world.

In addition, people can make informed decisions using holistic health principles with a responsible, proactive, and collaborative approach.

Holistic health can enhance healthcare professionals' services, giving clients and patients more options for better prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of health conditions.

For governments, holistic health can provide a proactive and engaged population. Informed citizens take timely actions, show responsibility, and be more productive at work, thus lowering healthcare costs for governments, which are top expenditures for many countries.

Holistic health can contribute to society by lowering stress, anxiety, depression, and physical illness, making people healthier and happier to create a better collective well-being. More content, healthier, and optimistic people tend to be more creative, productive, and peaceful.

Samples of Systemic Reviews and Meta-analysis on Holistic Health

In addition to thousands of individual studies conducted by scientists and published in peer-reviewed journals, I also come across hundreds of systemic reviews and meta-analysis covering the principles and benefits of holistic health approaches.

For example, some systemic reviews include the benefits of yoga, meditation, fasting, keto diets, sunlight, massage, acupuncture, herbal medicine, Tai Chi, chiropractic, aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, Reiki, and more.

You can find these reviews using these keywords in the PubMed portal or specialized search engines such as Google Scholar, which includes 4.3 million entries.

Out of hundreds, I’d like to give a dozen conclusive statements from these scientific reviews to give you an idea of how you might incorporate these practices into your holistic health approach.
