Hey, new high school teacher! You’ve always wanted to teach. It’s in your blood. You come from a family of educators. Perhaps, there were one or more special adults in your youth that inspired you to teach. Congratulations. You’ve heard the call, and you’ve responded.

Opportunities for missteps occur every day. An unintentional touch, word, or even a glance can be misinterpreted or twisted into something you never intended.

“Texas sees 42 percent rise in inappropriate student-teacher relationship investigations” — KVUE.com

Headlines such as these blaze across the screen and are all too common, “ Lockhart teacher arrested after she’s accused of having inappropriate relationship with student” (source: MySanAntonio.com), “Texas sees 42 percent rise in inappropriate student-teacher relationship investigations” (source: KVUE.com), etc.

Forty-one years ago, when I started teaching, staying an hour and a half after school to work with a struggling student in the classroom would have garnered accolades from parents and administrators. These days, that kind of effort would be considered cause for suspicion.

I’m sharing my observations and advice with you from my experience of seeing many teachers come and go. Use these simple and easy-to-implement tools of the trade to ensure a long and satisfying teaching career.

Read the school district policy

Read the school district policy manual regarding protocols of student-teacher interaction and follow them. It is far easier for administrators to dismiss a teacher for failing to follow district policy than it is to defend a teacher against allegations made regarding a questionable circumstance.

Tutor students in a shared room

If your school has a designated place for tutoring, use it. If there is no appointed tutoring room, meet the student or students in the school library. Often, the library will be open before school and after school. You are looking for a space conducive to meeting with a student, where there are plenty of other people around. Having others around generally ensures people are on their better behavior. Another option can be rotating the tutoring room around other teachers’ classrooms. The objective is to have tutoring somewhere where there are other people, preferably other responsible adults.

Tutoring a student before or after regular school hours

When working one-to-one with a student after school, make sure the door stays open the entire time. If you are sitting with a student at a table, sit across the table from the student. If you need to sit on the same side of the table with a student, place a vacant chair between you and the student. Distance is your friend.

Set reasonable tutoring and office hours and stick to them

Set clear and consistent times for tutoring students before and after school. Hold your tutoring sessions when there are plenty of other people in the building. For example, in a large 6A high school in San Antonio, the last class of the day ended at 4:05 pm. Tutoring ended no later than 5:00 pm, always. After 5:00 pm, very few teachers and students were still in the building.

Restrooms can be a problem

Most modern school buildings will have faculty restrooms separate from student restrooms. However, adult restrooms may be inconvenient or non-existent. You may have to use a bathroom shared with students. If this is the case, whether you are male or female, always use a private stall. Go in, close, and lock the stall door. Take care of your business. Never use the urinal.

Work smart, plan, and do what you were born to do

I hope I haven’t scared you. You have a gift. Children at your school need you and will benefit from your caring and commitment. But you must protect yourself by avoiding questionable circumstances.
