Secret Sex Rendezvous Does Not Remain Secret for Long

Julianna:

Julianna was a rather cute 8th-grader. Her hair was cut long and always loose, never tied or put up. She was an ordinary kid enrolled in regular classes. Her ever-present smile said there was something special about her. But yet, her smile suggested something was missing.

Julianna was a good student, not gifted, but not slow either. She was pleasant and got along well with everyone. She came from a loving family, though her parents had divorced several years earlier.

There was one thing Julianna didn’t have that she desperately wanted — popularity. She wanted to be in the in-crowd. Julianna especially wanted to be popular with the boys. In particular, she wanted to be Tommy’s girlfriend.

Tommy:

Tommy was a handsome youth. He had worked exceptionally hard to earn his position of 8th-grade varsity quarterback and team captain. Tommy wasn’t a gifted student, but he made the grade. The rule at the time was, “No pass, no play.” Tommy played every game.

Tommy had the status every 8th-grade boy wanted. The boys admired him, and more importantly, he was popular with the girls.

An Opportunity Presents Itself:

The school at the time was undergoing a major renovation. One of the main buildings, the 300 building, had been stripped down to the bare studs and was, of course, not being used for classes. Portable classrooms were scattered across the campus to compensate for the loss of classrooms.

Not only classrooms were unavailable, but two sets of student restrooms were also unavailable. Portable toilets moved onto campus. These were not the blueish-green phone booth size porta-potties found at construction sites and county fairs. These portable restrooms were of significant construction, air-conditioned, and each had a fair amount of room. Each bathroom consisted of a private toilet and a lavatory. And the best feature of all, as far as users were concerned, each restroom could be locked from the inside.

I don’t know if the rendezvous was preplanned, or the opportunity just presented itself. It might have been only by chance Julianna and Tommy found themselves at the restrooms at the same time. But they took advantage of their meeting. They spent considerable time together in secured privacy.

They concluded their tryst and returned to their classes. Each had a secret they were swearing to keep, yet bursting to tell.

Revelation:

Encounters of this nature don’t stay secret for long in a school. Who told which best friend first is not known. The cat was soon out of the bag. For Tommy, there were snickers, looks of shock by some girls, looks of awe and admiration by some boys. Tommy took great pride in showing the spot on his shoe where something had dripped.

Gossip was not so kind to Julianna. Conversations quickly turned to hushed whispers as she drew near. Comments of “slut,” “whore,” and “skank” could be heard just under breath. One boy even dared to throw a dollar bill at her feet while she walked down the hallway. Adolescent society does not treat boys and girls equally.

Principal Investigation and Consequences:

The administration caught wind of the rumors and interviewed both Tommy and Julianna. The truth was revealed. Parents were notified, and the students were assigned three days of In-School Suspension (ISS).

In my 15 years at the school, I can’t recall an incident so infamous and well known. Students in my classes readily volunteered to carry work to ISS for classmates, to get a glimpse at the couple involved. The ISS teacher later said even the teachers were more diligent about personally bringing work for their students over those three days.

Peer Group Consequences:

Tommy served his three-day In-school suspension and returned to regular classes pretty much none the worse.

However, for Julianna, the middle school community can be quite cruel. Julianna did not fair as well. Comments in school, as well as phone calls at home, foreshadowed bad karma for the rest of the year. After her school consequence, Julianna’s mother withdrew her from school. Rumors said she would stay with an aunt for the rest of the school year.

My Reflection:

I have faithfully recounted this incident as best as I can recall. I wanted to share the episode due to the intense feelings of the unfairness of societal expectations inflicted upon girls, but not boys. I may be overly sensitive to inequality between the genders because I am so proud of my only child, my precious daughter.

I can’t pretend to know how deeply this affected Julianna and her family. It must have been devastating. I hope moving to her aunt’s home allowed her to get a fresh start, and move forward. Julianna certainly must have felt cheated and hurt by consequences inflicted on her, and relatively few effects on Tommy.

I want to think in the 20 years since this event the social effects would be more balanced. But even in the era of the #MeToo movement, I have my doubts.
