Hi. My Name is Randle. I’m an Addict. I’m Addicted to Writing.

Writing tips for authors with an insatiable need to write.

I’m addicted to writing. There’s a constant whirl of ideas rushing through my head. I feel it. It’s not a metaphor; it’s a real sensation. I crave to publish. I get an adrenaline rush of clicking “Ready to publish” and a sense of immediate relief when the system notifies me I have posted.

For the next two or three hours, I’m satisfied. Then ideas start creeping back into my head. Publishing a story plants the seed to write another story and another story.

Are you a writing addict, too? Here are some treatments that work well for me.

Write early in the day.

Write early in the day, as soon as you get up, if possible. Get the thought that yearns to see daylight out. Satisfy your writing fix as early in the day as you can so you can get on with the rest of your life.

Get Your Fix Every Day, At the Same Time Every Day

Just as you have regular time for bathing and eating, establish a proper time for writing. Stick to it. Get your writing fix. Then you can relax. You’ve done your writing for the day.

Write a 60-minute story.

Consider creating a “60-minute story”. A 60-minute story is one in which you have only 60 minutes to develop your submission and publish it. Spend 30 minutes of original writing. Push ideas out of your head as fast as you can. You have so much to share. Let it out. Don’t be concerned about form, mechanics, or even spelling. Just get your ideas into the text editor.

Spend the second 30 minutes polishing what you wrote in the first 30 minutes. Then hit the “Publish now.”

Don’t Have 60 minutes?

Don’t have a 60-minute block, then write in smaller chunks, 5 to 10 minutes, or even 3 minutes at a time. Use a phone app like the Medium text editor or Google docs. Work on your submission throughout the day or over days.

In just a few minutes, I’ll have my writing fix for the day. I’ll have a few hours of relief. I’ll be able to drive to Houston and have a luxurious 3 hours to think of my next topic.
