5 Biggest Lies That Ruined My 20s
“If you do not tell the truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other people.”― Virginia Woolf

Who doesn’t want to follow success secrets that have been around for years?
Every one of us has a unique idea of what success is and has different meanings of success.
Getting your dream job, having a solid relationship, starting a new business, earning certain money, or setting yourself to buy certain things.
Whatever you do in your life, success is present in everything, and it becomes one of the drivers that move us forward.
But do you think about how often we are chasing success based on external factors that may have been set by society or by the people around us?
Below are the things I thought mattered the most to achieve the highest form of success, but in reality, it is not.
Lie #1 — Other people’s opinions don’t matter
As long as you’re surrounded by people, their opinion about you does matter — at least to a certain extent.
If your coworkers don’t like you, you will probably stop enjoying your work.
If your potential customers don’t like you, you’ll have a hard time building a successful business.
If your partner resents you, you will think you are not good enough.
As much as you like to think that other people’s opinion doesn’t matter, you will be lying to yourself.
Half of the things we do in our life are to showcase to the world around us what we are capable of and how good our life turned out.
Sure, it is more important that you feel good about yourself from within.
But external validation never goes away, no matter where you are in your life.
Lie #2 Hard work is the only key to success
You need to work hard to achieve certain goals and success, but hard work is not the only factor that contributes to your success.
To achieve remarkable results, talent, timing, and luck play a pivotal role too.
It’s all about being at the right time at the right place.
That’s the reason why a few people achieve massive success.
Success is a matter of how hard you work also in some cases, how lucky you are.
It’s quite paradoxical, but the harsh truth is that hard work isn’t everything, but it’s one of the few things you can control.
Lie #3 Money is not everything
This is one of the biggest lies that money is not important. The truth is life is a lot easier and more fun with money than without.
Of course, this is not the only way to measure success, but without financial resources, you’ll often hit roadblocks that might be hard to overcome.
If you want to try out something new, you need financial security to pay your bills and live a comfortable life.
Let’s be honest, It’s hard to live your best life with zero dollars to your name. And it’s also hard to make a great impact and help others if you can barely pay your bills.
Money might not be everything, but in today’s world money certainly matters. So it’s time to stop demonizing money.
Lie #4 You can have it ‘all’
For most of our life, we are told that we can have it all.
Education, dream job, marriage, kids, house, car, bank balance, and so on…
It’s not always necessary that life will turn out exactly in this order.
Like Oprah says,
“You can have it all. Just not all at once.”
Getting everything in life can take some time and expect to have it all at once is wrong.
You can slowly change your life by taking consistent action and doing the damn work. But it will not happen overnight.
Lie #5 You deserve ‘more’
The world is full of talented people who feel miserable, lack purpose, and fail to achieve their goals.
Why?
Because they trust in common lies about life and success. And they mostly do so because lies are more comfortable than the truth.
But what if life isn’t about being comfortable? What if it’s about living it to the fullest, including painful truths and our inner battles?
We all see ourselves somewhere in the distant future; we all have goals, dreams, and aspirations.
While the fundamental thought of setting bigger goals to be more motivated and take bigger action can be helpful, the truth is that it can also be quite toxic.
But sometimes the things you have are enough, enough for this moment.
The gist is to figure out what works best for you, so you don’t just blindly follow the advice of “setting big goals” just for the sake of big goals.
Life isn’t always fair, and sometimes, we work hard for nothing. And that’s okay.
Lastly-
In the end, a life of success is barely about our superficial goals. It’s about being happy and content deep inside.
It’s about how we feel when we go to bed at night and how we spend our Sunday mornings when there’s nothing we need to do or nowhere we need to go.
The truth is that you can choose what success means to you.
And the good news is that you can live exactly that way without justifying or providing any explanation to anyone.
This is your life, and you’re 100% allowed to live it in your unique way — in a way that’ll let you be your happiest self.
