52 Fascinating Facts About Sex That You Probably Didn’t Know
The world’s most popular subject is sex, here are 52 fascinating facts that you probably didn’t know about sex
As the world becomes increasingly liberal-minded, we are learning more and more about sex. Here are 52 fascinating facts about the subject that was once unspoken.
The record for the most female orgasms is 134 in one hour, the male record is just 16.
A fertile human male, on average, ejaculates between 2 and 5 millilitres of semen per ejaculation, which equates to approximately a teaspoon amount. In each millilitre of male ejaculate, there are normally about 100 million sperm. If a man drops below 20 million sperm per millilitre of ejaculate, he normally starts having fertility issues.
A human male at the height of his fertility is capable of producing enough sperm in just two weeks to impregnate every fertile woman on the planet.
Men are at their most fertile between the ages of 30 and 35, however, after the age of 40, male sperm quality starts to decline and by the time they hit 55, many men will struggle to conceive. So unlike in popular belief, most men will struggle with fertility after the age of 40 and only the most fertile of men can have children into old age.
Women are at their most fertile between the ages of 20 and 25, and by the age of 35 most women will struggle to conceive naturally, and after the age of 40, the majority of women will struggle even with IVF.
Some men literally can and do have sex with themselves. No jokes. They can stretch their penises and insert them into their own anuses, and literally f**k themselves, taking the notion of telling a person to go f**k themselves to an entirely different level.
Some men and women can actually give themselves oral sex, some even have their ribs taken out to allow them to do this but some don’t need to, because they already can.
Bizarrely, a study showed that poorer men preferred women with large breasts, middle-earners liked women with middle-sized breasts, and the top earners preferred tiny breasts. Nobody has any clue or even theories for why this is or why this would be.
Due to the increase of blood flow, women’s breasts can swell up to 25 percent during arousal, though just like with men and their erections, they deflate back to normal immediately afterward.
During sexual intercourse, it is not just the genitals and breasts that swell, the inner nose also does.
Evidence has shown that sex is one of the best ways to relieve a headache, it releases the tension which restricts blood vessels in the brain, and those who have migraines are 20 percent more likely to desire sex — as if our instincts know the headache busting benefits. Yep, ironically a headache and migraine is a reason to have sex, not to not have it.
Evidence has shown that by having four orgasms a week a man can lower his chances of having prostate cancer.
Gay men have the most sex, lesbian women have the least sex.
Gay men and lesbian women are the most sexually satisfied — at least according to studies.
Straight women have more orgasms than lesbian women because they typically have a lot more sex. Though lesbian women have a higher orgasm ratio per sex session than straight women.
Bisexual men and women have the least orgasms of everyone, nobody is quite sure why.
The vagina is a self-cleaning organ, because of this one of the best ways to mess it up is to try to clean it using douches. In a way, trying to clean inside the vagina is like putting soap and water directly into your eyes, it won’t end well.
One of the most common reasons both men and women end up with smelly genitals is because they overwash and use soaps, which ironically if done and used too frequently make genitals smelly. Not just that, but in women overcleaning — especially if attempts are made to clean inside the vagina — can mess up the pH balance and lead to conditions like bacterial vaginosis and increase the chances of yeast infections.
The vast majority of uncircumcised men will at some point in their lives suffer from thrush, many will suffer at many points in their lives. The vast majority of women will suffer from yeast infections, the majority at many points in their lives, and of the sexually active women, the vast majority will suffer from bacterial vaginosis, the majority at many points in their lives. Despite this, many men and women have no clue about these conditions or how to identify and manage them, this lack of knowledge leads to lots of problems between couples.
Postworkout is a great time to have sex. Working out releases testosterone in your body and also circulates blood into your genital area. Women also have testosterone so this counts for both men and women. Just remember, make sure you have a shower first — especially if you want oral sex.
Genital regions have the same sweat glands as your armpits, apocrine glands. This is why hygiene is so important, unless you’ve recently washed, your genitals will be like your armpits, except with urine included. That’s why a rule of thumb is if your armpits are sweaty and smelly, your genitals will be.
If ever you feel like your partner always smells of shit down there when you give them oral, it is likely because they’ve had a shit but have not washed with soap and water afterward. Yep, wiping doesn’t stop your ass smelling of shit, only washing does. Studies have shown a shockingly large number of people don’t realise this.
A frequent reason that both men and women stop giving oral sex is because of a partner with smelly genitals, and a fear that if they articulate that to their partner that it will upset them. This is why one of the best ways to ensure consistent oral sex is to make it so your partner is more afraid of not telling you that you are smelly than telling you that you are.
The best way to clean genitals is using warm water and nothing else, for men it is remembering to clean behind the foreskin, and for women, it is remembering not to attempt to clean inside.
When we orgasm we gain sexual relief and so are less inclined to be incentivised to go again, at least right away. Some believe this is why it is more difficult for women to orgasm, by making it harder to gain sexual relief, when women are not in heat they are less likely to have sex i.e. why start something when getting relief is difficult, and when they are in heat they are more likely to keep having sex repeatedly due to not getting sexual relief from orgasm i.e. their sex drive doesn’t get dampened through orgasm. So if you have ever wondered why it is so hard for woman to orgasm through vaginal penetration alone, it is potentially because they are not supposed to be able to, they are supposed to always be on the edge without ever getting relief, because that makes them want more sex when they are in heat, and less sex when they are not.
The mushroom head of the male penis is believed to have evolved as a defence against infidelity, and as a means to commit infidelity. It’s believed its purpose is to dig out a rival's sperm from the vagina and in tests it has been shown that it has the power to remove up to 87 percent of a rival's sperm so long as the sex comes within 24 hours of the previous ejaculation. To further back this up, studies have shown that when a man feels threatened by a love rival, when he next has sex with his partner, he thrusts harder and deeper, which has been shown to help further excavate sperm.
A theory for why it is so much easier for men to orgasm than women is linked to the fact that we may have once, in our distant pre-human past, been polyamorous. A man would come along, have sex, orgasm, and be sexually relieved. The woman would not be sexually relieved because she had not orgasmed, and so when the next man came along, she would be ready to go again, at which point, the same process would be repeated, increasing the woman’s chance of getting pregnant and allowing all the different men's sperm to fight it out to prove who is the strongest.
Nobody fully understands why from an evolutionary perspective women are capable of having an orgasm. Some postulate it is linked to our distant past, when perhaps the female orgasm used to be part of the procreation process — so the orgasm would lead to the release of an egg. However, most are coming to the conclusion it likely is like the male prostate is as a means for pleasure, it is just a quirk of our design and there has never been an evolutionary reason per se for why women can orgasm.
It is postulated that the reason why the female orgasm has become important is that sex is no longer about making babies all the time. When sex is about making babies, women have an incentive to have sex and so build sexual connections. When there is no need to make babies, this can kill the female libido and thus relationships. Step forth the female orgasm. That means one theory is that the rise of the female orgasm is linked to the need to incentivise women to continue to have sex with men beyond the need to make babies, otherwise relationships would collapse. Paradoxically, it is believed this is why in cultures where sex is about making babies and women have a lot of them, the orgasm is substantially less important to the sexual satisfaction of women than in cultures where this is not the case.
There is evidence that shows that sex hinders people’s productivity, the more sex people have the less productive they tend to be.
When a man is stressed his sex drive increases, when a woman is stressed her sex drive decreases. It’s believed this happens because, in our distant past, stress used to equal a poor environment to raise children, which would kill women’s sex drives, but we still need to have children to survive, so men’s sex drive would increase in response to the female sex drives decrease, ensuring we continued to have children.
The clitoris is basically a tiny penis though there are some who believe it be a half-grown penis, or depending on your perspective, the penis to be a full-grown clitoris.
The clitoris contains eight thousand nerve fibres, twice as many as the penis yet ironically the clitoris requires more stimulation than the penis for orgasm to be achieved.
There are studies that show that 40 percent of both men and women fantasise about other people during sex.
Whereas only 55 percent of men are satisfied with their penis size, 85 percent of women are pleased with their partners penis size. Not only that, but women are far more likely to view their partners penis size as large than small.
Lisa Sparxx, a porn star, had intercourse with 919 men in 24 hours, setting a new world record in 2004.
Women who have difficulty reaching orgasm might just have cold feet — literally. One study found that giving women warm socks increased their chance of reaching an orgasm.
On average, women find it easier to orgasm using sex toys than all other methods combined, and women who use sex toys during intercourse typically have the most orgasms.
Nipple orgasms, or “nipplegasms,” are real. A brain imaging study (fMRI) in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, showed that a woman’s brain “lit up” with arousal exactly the same as it did from stimulation down under. It’s believed that as many as one-third of women have experienced such orgasms.
Some men are able to get “nipplegasms” but studies have shown that nipples are basically dead — from a sexual perspective — but sensitive skin for the majority of men. So for most men, touching their nipples is more likely to annoy them than arouse them.
When a man or a woman sucks on a woman’s nipples it releases chemicals in both of their brains that are specifically designed to promote bonding. That means suckling on nipples actually increases the bond between men and women. Not just that, but these chemicals have also been shown to lower stress and anxiety. Meaning suckling on nipples is a great way to both increase a romantic bond, and also to destress.
Women can have both clitoral and vaginal orgasms, vaginal orgasms are described as whole-body orgasms and more psychologically pleasing orgasms, whereas clitoral orgasms are described as localised.
The female orgasm lasts on average three times longer than the male orgasm — 12 seconds compared to 4 seconds — so it may not come as often but when it does it typically stick around longer.
The most common advice sex therapists give couples is to forget about orgasms and instead simply focus on sharing intimacy together, having fun together, and having a pleasurable time together, and whatever happens during that time, orgasm or not, is irrelevant so long as you achieve one or more of those three factors. Typically, when men and women start doing this, both start having more orgasms.
There is evidence that as many as 80 percent of women have faked orgasms during vaginal intercourse, but women are not alone, as there is also evidence showing that as many as 30 percent of men also fake orgasms. Both men and women fake orgasms for the same reason, to protect their partner’s ego.
Some believe that the focus on the male female orgasm gap has greatly damaged women’s sex lives, firstly because it has made men believe women should orgasm like they do putting pressure on women to orgasm, and secondly because it has made women feel they should orgasm putting further pressure on women to orgasm. And feeling pressure with sex tends to ruin sex lives.
Approximately 10 percent to 15 percent of women have never had an orgasm, and some women simply can’t orgasm no matter what. Only 10 percent of women can easily climax.
Surveys suggest that up to 50 percent of women are not satisfied with how often they reach climax. Evidence also shows that due to the complex way the mind and body work together, and the fact that they need to work in unison for the female orgasm to happen, the desire to orgasm can frequently be the biggest factor stopping a woman from having an orgasm. Meaning ironically, typically, the more a woman wants to orgasm, the more she may struggle to do so. Men have this problem to an extent but due to it being much easier for them to orgasm, it causes less of a problem.
When it comes to orgasms messing up sex lives, men and women are on opposite sides of the coin, the most common way orgasms detrimentally affect men’s sex life is down to a fear of premature ejaculation, which ironically makes it more likely that they will ejaculate prematurely. For women, it is the opposite, it is a desire to orgasm, because ironically the greater the desire the less the chance of reaching orgasm.
Studies have shown that women who have anal sex have the most orgasms, with the orgasm rate for women who have anal sex over 90 percent. Though it is not the anal sex per se that is believed to be behind the high orgasm rate, anal sex requires preparation and so that increases sexual anticipation, duration and sexual variations, and duration along with sexual variation and anticipation increases the chance of orgasm in women.
Male ejaculation does not necessarily equal orgasm, they are separate, typically a man has an orgasm then ejaculates, which means both can happen separately, and they frequently do though typically it is ejaculation that comes without the orgasm rather than the other way round. So just because a man has ejaculated does not mean he has had an orgasm.
Whether you need lube or not, for both men and women adding lube increases the chance of orgasm.
The average speed of ejaculation is 48 kilometres an hour, men can increase the speed of ejaculation by strengthening their pelvic muscles.
Frequent sex has been shown to improve the memory of women.
Routine sex is the key to a healthy sex life, it only becomes bad when that’s the only type of sex there is. So a healthy sex life has routine sex as its foundation, but spontaneity is kept alive, and couples have a night every month or so where real variation is brought into the bedroom either through a special date night, weekend away or the like.
Orgasms are of the brain, this counts for both men and women. However, when it comes to male ejaculation, that is sparked by nerve cells in the spinal cord. That means whereas a man needs a brain to orgasm, he only needs a spine to ejaculate.
When you are aroused your pain threshold sees a stark increase, this is why when people get tortured they can become aroused, because it increases their pain threshold which helps them become better able to survive the ordeal.
