2019 Miss USA Jumps to Her Death in NYC — Why We Need Therapy

Some extremely bad news just occurred as I was scrolling through my Instagram on my phone — that’s usually where I get the latest news from because I don’t watch television that much nowadays — where I read that the 2019 Miss USA Cheslie Kryst has died from, what reports are saying, by attempted suicide.

The 2019 Miss USA, reportedly, jumped off a building in Manhattan, NY that was sixty stories high and while there isn’t any reason given for her suicide, it was very sad for a lot of people and it made me sad just reading about this.

She was a brilliant young Black woman doing some amazing things. She had several law degrees — including a law degree. She ran her own business, and what I admired about her the most was that she was working with prison inmates to get them the help they need fighting the unfair injustices against them by the judicial system. So Cheslie was doing some great work while she was on this Earth.

Now speaking as a Black man growing up in America, the conversations about mental health was something that was pretty much nonexistent. As Black people, we go through so much trauma, pain, and suffering that it becomes the norm. I don’t know every single Black person on this Earth, but the one thing we all have in common is Black trauma.

This is why I applaud people like Kevin Gates who has become more open about his struggles with mental health. During his interview on the Big Facts podcast, he talked about his battles with depression, past traumas, and even being molested when he was a child. He even talked about how over a year ago he deleted all of his social media accounts. His reasoning for that was because he was comparing his everyday life to what he saw on Instagram which was the perception of a “perfect” life from other people’s pages. It brought him down so low to the point he was going to commit suicide till luckily a stranger talked him out of doing so.

More and more as time goes by, we are seeing more people, not only just in the Black community, but all across other groups break the stigma surrounding mental health. It’s a continuous battle that all of us, including myself, have to face every single day.

If you are a person who is struggling with some type of mental health challenge, please don’t be afraid to speak up and ask for help. I’m no expert in this type of area, but I can tell you that there are solutions and resources out there for you for whatever mental issues you’re going through.

Never, ever, ever, give up. God bless everybody out there. I’m praying for all of you.
