100 Published Stories in 541 Days

1 year, 5 months and 25 days of Medium

100 stories, 541 Days.

On average that is 1 story every 5.4 days.

Not bad considering I took a long break last year, have a content writing business, work part-time as a nurse and have 2 young children!

I made a deal with myself when I first started on Medium that I wouldn’t allow it to take over my life. I didn’t want to focus all my efforts on here as it wasn’t a main money earner.

But I fell in love with this platform!

Now-a-days you can usually find me hanging out here every single day (usually first thing in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee so I can peruse all the amazing stories).

It is an amazing place to publish your writing. To have your voice be heard. And to explore many different topics that you may not be able to write elsewhere.

For me, I blog about content marketing and small biz on my website. And my usual clients are small biz mums in health/wellness or apparel.

Medium provides a great space for me to stretch my creativity and expand into topics I don’t have the opportunity to write about otherwise.

It is not just about the ability to write about whatever the heck you want, though. It is about reading stories, engaging and interacting with the beautiful community.

People whose stories I love reading:

There are so many more….I could seriously list these ALL DAY LONG!

What has happened in 541 days?

Well, aside from publishing 100 articles…🤣

I have learnt ALOT!

I have learnt a lot. And not just about writing. I have learnt so much about myself too. I have pushed boundaries and written about things I have never written about before! And I loved it.

I took on several writing challenges:

I developed my Medium profile.

I grew my account to 413 followers. That is 413 people who have read, commented, clapped or shared my stories! That is simply amazing to me. Thank you to each and every one of you. 🤗🙌🏼

I have increased views, read times and fans. But these are vanity metrics and I try not to look at them too much…like more then every 5 minutes 🤣

I tracked my results, articles and money.

I have created a spreadsheet for Medium to track all my published stories, plus earnings and cost of Medium membership. In 541 days I have earnt $57.01 and spent $121.45 on membership. I may be in the red and I am definitely not in the $100 club! 🤣But I am not giving up this platform!

I developed some “index” style posts and an “About Me” story.

I spent some time developing an “About Me” style story that links to indexes of my different stories.

Key learnings from the last 541 days

I am not going to bore you with more “how to make money from medium” or “how to be a top writer on medium” info. That is not the point of this post, and besides there are a gazillion posts on that already.

Instead, this is a more personal look at what I have learnt on my journey with Medium.

  • Engagement is everything on here! Seriously, don’t just publish and run. Take the time to interact with people, reply if they comment on your stories. Find interesting articles and comment or share. Engage! And not just because it helps YOU, but because it helps them too. Plus, you never know…your Medium bestie could be just around the corner!
  • You don’t have to publish every single day. Seriously. Don’t do it if it doesn’t suit your life and schedule. It is too much pressure.
  • Write about ANYTHING and EVERYTHING!
  • HAVE FUN!

100 articles in 541 days is pittance next to so many of the amazing writers on here, but I am proud of my achievement. I am not writing for the keyboard warriors or trolls out there. I am not writing to set records or break banks.

I am writing for myself. I am not comparing myself to anyone and I am not competing against anyone. And I am damn proud of that!

What will the next 541 days bring?

First, I am working on a 12 part series — “The 12 Rules Of Freelance Writing as a Work-At-Home-Mum”. I am super excited for this as I know first hand how hard it is to be juggling your writing dreams with kids, family and all that comes with it! This series is to help WAHM’s with simple, actionable tips to have them creating a freelance writing business they LOVE!

If you are a parent who wants to build a freelance writing biz make sure you keep an eye out for this one! 😉

Second, I aim to publish 5–7 times per week until I have 200 articles on Medium. After that I may back off a little, depending on how I am feeling. I don’t want to burn myself out and I have SO many other projects I am working on to.

What else would I love the next 541 days to bring?

I would love to not be in the red on Medium! 🤣🤑

Even if I earn enough to cover my membership and a cup of coffee each month I would be happy.

Mainly, I simply want to embrace this platform and continue to engage with people on here.

Maybe it will take me another 541 days to write another 100 articles. Maybe it will take me half that time. But it doesn’t matter. I write when I want, about what I want. I have met and will continue to meet so many amazing people on here. And that is the magic of Medium.

I love this platform, the connections and the ability to write whatever is on my mind. I am excited to see what the next 100 articles brings!
