10 Questions Ask Your Child
Questions to ask to avoid the dreaded “I don’t know”
Do you ever ask your child, “What did you do at school today?” And you receive that dreaded answer “I don’t know” or “I don’t remember.”
There’s a reason for this- it’s an open question. Imagine a child is in school all day 7 hours of learning, following directions, and seated. We can improve a child’s communicative interaction by asking an open-ended question tied to some context.
Below is a list of 15 questions you can ask your child to start a conversation with meaning.
- Did anything make you feel happy today?
- Did anything upset you today?
- What were you grateful for today?
- Who did you see at school today?
- Is there anything you’re looking forward to this week?
- How would you like to spend the rest of your day?
- Did anything funny happen today?
- Do you have any plans for tomorrow?
- How do you feel about going to school tomorrow?
- Who are you excited to see tomorrow?
These questions allow you to engage in a meaningful conversation and it provides them a specific topic to discuss. “What did you do at school today?” Is such a broad question.
By providing a context and a topic, you are relieving your child of that demanding pressure to think about their entire day and formulate a response.
This creates a supportive environment to help them feel confident talking with you.
