10 Highly Effective Ways to Engage Your Audience on Medium

Getting your audience engaged: everything you need to know about Medium’s engagement features to boost your earnings

Image by cookie_studio on Freepik (adapted)

Whether you’re writing for your blog, publishing your articles on Medium, or sharing your expertise on Twitter or anywhere else online, you can find plenty of ways to spark interest and get your audience talking.

If you have a sizable audience on your social media channels, you can also use your audience engagement strategy on those platforms to boost traffic and conversions.

But what makes a good engagement strategy? Is there a right way to go about it? And how can you be sure that your efforts are making an impact? Once you have a good grasp on the basics of engagement, it’s time to scale up.

To answer all these questions. I’m excited to tell you about Engage, a new publication on Medium that will help you boost your stories’ reach, scale your audience and improve content monetization.

Engage: You audience-scaling publication on Medium

Thanks for taking the time to read more about Engage. Let me start by inviting you to follow us and consider becoming a writer; please take a minute to read our mission statement and subscribe to our newsletter so you never miss a thing.

If you’re passionate about community building, we are in the process of putting together a team of Medium’s best. Please leave a private note if you are interested in working with us as an editor.

To give you a brief overview. In less than a week, our team has grown exponentially. We now have more than 60 contributors, and thousands of people have viewed our stories.

Several of our published stories are already ranking on the new Google quality-based algorithm SERPs and amassing hundreds of views, namely this piece.

Our goal is to make Engage one of Medium’s most successful publications.

Still, there’s a long road ahead, and we are not yet seeing the level of engagement required to make this project work.

Everything you need to know about Engage

Hence, there’s some clarification to be made.

For the past few days, some of our writers have reached out with questions regarding our niche. Our answer has always been the same.

Please send to us your most engaging stories.

While most of the publications on Medium focus mainly on quality and adherence to their niche of choice, Engage focuses on quality and engagement potential.

Engagement is our niche.

Engagement is our rule of thumb

We are still in the publication installment phase. Please help us grow! In Medium's current algorithmic status quo, we can only succeed if our members are altruistically committed to building an engaged community.

You are therefore expected to have genuinely engaged with other stories on the publication before submitting yours. 🤝

On Engage, content is the prime minister, but engagement is king.

This community doesn’t need more navel-gazing writers or self-acclaimed top authors. We need members who love reading their fellow writers’ stories above all else.

Engage before you submit.

If you don’t believe in our mantra, or you don’t have the public-spirited nature required by this community, your stories aren’t a good fit.

It’s not even a matter of time to engage if you’re wondering.

People only care about reading time because that’s what puts food on the table.

Michael Swengel, in “Medium Is What You Make It,” reminds us how we need to “refocus our perspective” about our writing journey here.

I would like to pick up from where he left off and say that we also need to rethink our engagement with those walking beside us if we want to scale Medium as a whole.

Today on Medium, there’s much more to engagement than meets the eye, and before the craved partner program earnings find their way to your pockets, there are many engagement-boosting strategies to consider.

We’ve worked on a shortlist that can help everyone on Engage boost their audience. We only need to do the work ourselves and think like a cohort of engaged links in the writing chain.

How to submit your stories to Engage

The Engage guild is open for new members, and we would love to read your stories, please consider becoming a member.

You can send your application by email at [email protected] or reply to our mission statement published here, stating that you would like to work with us.

Ten proven strategies to engage on Medium

Writing for Medium is simple; growing an engaged audience is another matter.

Now, you need an engagement strategy that will help you keep your readers coming back for more.

While there are some tools out there that can help you build an engaged online community, it’s worth noting that engagement doesn’t have to involve a lot of effort.

With that in mind, here are ten engagement tactics that you can use to scale your audience by joining Engage on Medium:

  1. You are encouraged to mention your fellow Engage writers and link to their stories; this helps everyone to cross-pollinate ideas and signals the algorithm to promote each piece to a broader audience. Type the @ sign followed by the name or handle of the author you want to mention in a story. When you select their name from the dropdown menu, their name will be added.
  2. The following feed is a great tool that you can use to make sure you never miss a story published on Engage. Follow us here and regularly check for updates under “following.” You should only follow your favorite publications (some will post dozens of stories daily), or else the feed becomes a deluge.
  3. Create a list and call it “Engage” (mine is here). Then, add every story published in our publication to that list. Then, you can share it at the end of stories, as I’ve done below.
  4. Adding “Engage” as one of your stories’ five tags ensures that anyone can easily find all of our stories bulked together when performing a search. Don’t forget to follow the “Engage” tag found here.
  5. Use all of the social media engagement features provided by Medium. On top of each story, you’ll find buttons that make it easy to share stories on Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn. You should use them for your stories, but if you are working with us, it’s crucial that you also cross-pollinate stories from fellow Engage writers on your channels.
  6. If a story is too long and you don’t have the time to read it all at once, please save it for later by adding it to your reading list (and the new “Engage” list you’ve created).
  7. Before you leave, please take a few seconds to clap, leave a response and give it a skim while highlighting some key ideas. You must make sure you scroll to the end of the story so that your time is taken in as a “read” and not simply as a “view.”
  8. Always give 50 claps and respond as soon as you find a new story by an Engage author. The algorithm seems to favor stories that receive high engagement as soon as they are published. The number of fans (users that have clapped) and responses seem to be crucial engagement metrics for Medium’s relational-based algorithm.
  9. Follow and subscribe to Engage authors to build a sense of community among the team. You can find us here. Then safelist those authors you’ve subscribed to on your email so that their stories don’t fall into oblivion within your spam folder.
  10. It would be helpful to subscribe to the Engage newsletter on substack to stay up to date with the latest writing and audience monetizing tips and official announcements.

Concluding remarks

Medium is a fun and highly effective platform to publish your work. You can share your thoughts and stories, find others with similar interests, and build your audience.

Engaging your audience is about more than simply writing for your audience’s benefit. It’s about giving them something to talk about and helping them feel connected to you.

Dear readers and writers,

The best way to keep your audience engaged is to engage with them. Now that content is the new black:

Engagement is King!
