Yvonne Wheeler, 1st Black woman as Chief of Los Angeles County Federation of Labor
How Black women are making footprints of success for many to follow.

Preparation meets opportunity once again. Los Angeles County Federation of Labor membership has elected their 1st Black woman as their chief who will take the helm after the infamous leaked recording roiled L.A. County Federation.
Ms. Wheeler was a veteran labor leader and will now take over as head of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor breaking the male trend of 140-year history by becoming the first Black woman to lead the powerful group.
The L.A. County Federation of Labor represents 800,000 workers in 300 unions and they all unanimously voted for Ms. Wheeler hands down. She will be leading the helm of an organization that is one of the most influential players in state and local politics.
The recent leaked recordings of racial comments by city leaders (Ron Herrera, Nury Martinez, Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo) is a tumultuous time for a new leader to take the helm in the face of much controversy and division.
Starting with a full plate of responsibilities, at the top of her list with other duties is the monumental task of repairing relationships between Black workers and Latino. Based on her perceived reputation, she will prove to be the ideal person for the job because she has a background working with a wide range of public and private sector unions along with a history of advocacy for more diversity in labor groups.
Wheeler’s roots spread far and wide in national labor organization and even the Civil Rights movement where she marched with Black student protesters against schools unwilling to integrate.
Union officials and other Wheeler’s supporters believe that her overwhelming vote to head the labor union makes her the perfect candidate and currently with the first Black female Los Angeles mayor, Karen Bass, are a strong combo to deal with the many ills affecting Los Angeles.
In conclusion, sometimes the right man for the job is a woman and has credentials that dictate this rightness. When the old is not working, time for something new or a new perspective. Ladies are standing up more and with the credentials that demands this to be. The cream now rises to the top in a patriarchal society.
