Your Rights, My Rights; Who’s Right?
You have the right to free speech. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion.
Dear Mr. Lyft Driver,
When we encountered each other this week, I don’t think you understood why I canceled the ride and called for another Lyft.
It wasn’t because of your race or religion. It was because I have the right to disagree with your free speech.
You have rights.
I accept that you may put stickers on your car that say, “FUCK Authority” and “Support Cannibalism — Eat Me.” I agree you can play loud music in your car that uses vulgar and obscene language. I agree it’s your right, but don’t expect me to support it.
I have rights, too.
- I have the right not to have offensive language shoved in my face.
- I have the right to live in a civil and polite society.
- I have the right to protect my children from negative influences.
You’ve chosen to drive for Lyft. Lyft customers have the right to expect a certain standard of service. Even if you turn off your music, I don’t want to ride in your car. Your free speech taints my reputation. I’m afraid I have to disagree with the statements on your vehicle.
Rights come at a price.
I will complain to Lyft and seek a refund of my ride cancelation fee. I may not get a refund, but that’s okay. I understand rights don’t come free.
You want your right to free speech, and you want your Lyft income. You may learn there’s a cost to maintaining your rights.
