Summary

The article emphasizes the importance of perspective in shaping one's future, suggesting that a change in perspective can lead to personal growth, learning opportunities, and a shift from perceiving challenges as obstacles to viewing them as chances for improvement.

Abstract

The author of the article argues that our perspective plays a crucial role in determining our life's trajectory. Initially viewing writing as a means to make money, the author faced challenges and a period of low engagement, leading to dissatisfaction. However, a shift in perspective from focusing on immediate success to embracing learning and patience resulted in increased engagement and a different measure of success. The article posits that a growth perspective allows individuals to see opportunities instead of obstacles, to view weaknesses as areas for improvement, and to remain focused on what truly matters despite external distractions. It suggests that experience is the most effective teacher in altering perspectives and that understanding one's deep-seated motivations—"the why"—is key to maintaining a resilient perspective and achieving goals. The author concludes that by consciously shaping one's perspective, reactions to situations can be positively influenced, leading to personal and professional growth.

  • Successful individuals are clear about their motivations, which enables them to be laser-focused on their objectives.
  • Changing one's perspective is not just about seeing things differently but also about sustaining that change through self-awareness and reflection.

Your Perspective Has A lot To Say About Your Future

Our perspective shapes our life. How we perceive different things has a lot to say about how we react to them.

My initial perception of writing was making money. I was intrigued by articles that read, “I made over $8000 by writing in a month — here’s how you can do it too.”

I thought, ‘’If they can do it, I can too.”

Again I led with the perception that it was easy to go viral and earn as well.

While some people may have found it easy, I didn’t.

I stopped writing for more than 20 days. I ended that particular month having posted articles just 9 times. The small bit of engagement I had dipped. I wasn’t happy.

It was when I would start reading random articles that I thought, maybe writing is the way to go for me.

Initially, I perceived each article as a gold mine waiting to be farmed. Yes, it was wishful thinking, but maybe it was blatantly wrong.

It is only when I thought that I could improve and told myself to be patient while putting in the work that my engagement and success on this platform increased.

How does that work?

I became okay with putting hours into an article that ultimately failed.

Not because I didn’t want to earn money anymore, but because my perception changed.

Every failed article is a learning opportunity. Every new thing I read is perceived as a chance to improve.

To this day, the article I took the longest to write has not performed the best.

Perception is a teacher

Even the richest man on the planet has quirks (Boy, does he love Twitter).

As you make more mistakes and ultimately mature, your perspective develops until it becomes something you believe in.

Before your perspective on things shapes you, shape it yourself.

A growth perspective allows you to see choices as opportunities and not as obstacles.

It allows you to see your weaknesses as a chance to improve and broaden your strengths.

It allows you to see things you can’t control as things that can distract you rather than things that stop you from doing what you want to. It concentrates your focus on what really matters.

Can you see how a different perspective can alter your life?

People with weak perspectives keep faltering until they strengthen them. That is nature at work.

It is easy to change your perspective

To keep it changed is another thing

Look around your room and find the colour blue.

When you think of blue and look around, you will see so many blue things. Maybe more than before.

The same is the case here.

When you enrich your perspective, you see only opportunities.

Ultimately, experience is what changes perspectives. Experience truly is the best teacher.

The thing with experience is, you can’t cheat it.

So how do you change your perspective right now?

When you go after something, know you’re why.

Why do you want to achieve it?

If the answer is to make money. Well, why do you want to make money?

Go deeper into your reasoning. The more you understand why you want something, the easier it is to achieve.

You’re why shapes your perspective — your ultimate goal.

When you have a ‘Why’ you genuinely stand behind, you focus on it. It becomes rock solid for you.

Through it, you can move forward.

Your perception of something is how you think about it — how you make sense of everything.

So it goes beyond the simple success-failure conversation.

Do you think you have a lot? Do you think you have less?

Rarity and abundance are an example. If you focus on rarity around you, you will deliberately pick out the ‘less’ things. It is like focusing on blue.

If you focus on abundance, you will deliberately pick out the ‘more’ things.

A man among toddlers may consider himself a genius. At the same time, a man in the room with the smartest brains on the planet may consider himself a fool.

It goes both ways.

If you live with vastly poor people you think of yourself to be rich. If you live with vastly rich people, you think of yourself to be poor.

If you are poor you strive to be rich. Thus, in a rich environment, you will gain more than in a poor environment.

If I perceive winning as gaining something to learn from an experience, I could say ‘I don’t lose’. At the same time, if I do lose in front of you, you might think I am an idiot. While at the same time, if I get an actionable lesson from the supposed loss, I didn’t lose, did I?

Your perception shapes your reaction

If someone says something to you as a joke, and you perceive it as a snarky comment, you will become defensive. They said it as a joke, but you perceived it differently.

This might cause you to start a fight when there was no need for one.

Again, if you take criticism as hostility, you are more likely to discard it. At the same time, taking it as a chance to improve, you could go a long way with that perspective.

Another benefit is, when people do criticise you to throw your focus astray, you could use that as an opportunity to get better.

People usually talk a lot. It is easier to find a good talker than a good listener.

A humble person is likely to listen more. At the same time, an intelligent person is likely to listen more. Their perspectives differ from the majority.

They use it as an opportunity to learn something new. While the rest take it as an opportunity to introduce themselves.

Why do you want to achieve a certain goal?

Are you desperate for money? Do you want to make a difference? Do you want to be famous?

Ok well, why do you want to achieve any one of these?

Are you desperate for money because you are in a tight spot? Do you want to prove someone wrong? Do you want to prove something to yourself?

Do you want to be famous because you want the spotlight to be on you? Do you want to see yourself on TV? Do you want a documentary on yourself?

Everyone has a different why. Society changes us in different ways, that shapes our perspective and our why.

The most successful people were 100% clear on their why. That caused them to be laser-focused on their goals and ultimately end up achieving them.

Know you’re why. Concentrate your focus and accomplish what it is you want to accomplish.

If anyone can do it, it’s you.
