“It will always be foolish to ask a cheater if they would ever cheat on you.” ― Dennis Adonis

I look over. My spouse is greeting someone at our front door. It is his school friend, Damon. My husband told me Damon was dropping by to watch Sunday football. I bought chips, candy, and beer at the store. There are homemade ham sandwiches and dip in the fridge to keep everyone fed and happy, allowing me to relax and watch the game. This is a serve-yourself kind of day.

A Nice Day Of Sunday Football

I’m looking forward to this game. My team, the Chicago Bears, is actually playing a team worse than them. I have a chance at a great day of yelling and happy screaming at the TV. Maybe they will improve their record, Hu-rah.

Then I heard a female voice. I’m thinking, “Cool, Damon’s wife Steph has come. This will be a good time.” I’ve met her a few times. She is an attractive, intelligent woman. Since we are both working wives, we always have something to discuss. I glance at the doorway. Wait a minute; his wife is not who is coming through the door. I walk over.

“Hey, Damon,” I say. “How are you?”

“Doing great,” he replies. “Good to see you.”

Neither he nor my spouse introduced the woman. She stood there, looking back and forth at the two men.

Who is This Woman, Harpo?

The woman is youngish, beautiful, and stylishly overdressed for a day of eating chips and dip on someone’s couch. Her make-up is flawless. My make-up is nonexistent. My spouse looks sheepish as hell. He looks at the wall, then the ceiling, then the floor. Uh, oh. I step directly into Damon’s and the woman’s route into my house. I look her straight in her eyes.

“And who are you?” I quietly ask.

My spouse steps quickly to my side as my quiet voice has alerted him to trouble on the way.

“I’m Anita,” she replies.

That’s it — no further explanation. I look at my husband. He is reaching over to touch my arm. I shift my arm beyond his grasp.

“And who are you to Damon?” I ask.

“I’m a close friend,” she says. The way she says it, I know she is not a close friend but his side piece. My husband’s cheating friend has brought a side piece to my home.

Now, my spouse moves close to me and squeezes my arm. I don’t know why he is squeezing my arm. I do not allow side bitches in my house. Maybe he forgot, so let me help him, Damon, and her understand.

You Gots To Go

“You need to go somewhere else. You cannot stay here. This is some bullshit.” I enunciate clearly and firmly.

Damon says, “Your husband invited me over. I don’t think you can put me out.”

I smile my serial killer smile and look at my husband. I say nothing. Ok, Spouse, you got yourself into this; get yourself out. He blinks rapidly a few times.

“You have to go,” Spouse says, stepping in front of me. He walks over and opens the front door.

Damon does not move. Instead of giving up, he says, “I thought this was your house. Control your woman.”

So, the so-called friend is attempting to interject himself into our relationship. I, too, want to see my husband control his woman.

I still haven’t said another word. Anita looks at me, then turns and walks out the door. Damon continues to stand there until my husband moves toward him. He turns and leaves. No sooner than I saw their car pull away, I lit into the man standing next to me.

What Else Is Going On?

“You told that fool he could bring a woman other than his wife to my house,” I am yelling. “What were you thinking? We know his wife. We ate dinner at their house. We have gone out together.

Why would you put us in this position? What kind of woman do you think I am to allow a cheating man and his sidepiece into my house? This is only an opportunity to be entangled in someone else’s mess. Have you lost your ever-loving mind?”

“Are you taking some woman to his house behind my back? You want to hang out with cheating men?” I’m upset at this whole thing. My imagination is running wild at the sheer stupidity of this situation. If this is going on, what else is going on? The possibilities are endless.

This was my first husband. We married too young. To this day, I do not know why he did that. When we amicably divorced a couple of years later, it was apparent that one issue was that my expectations of his behavior were not things he was willing to change. We loved each other but did not know we had different life outlooks.

The incident with the cheating friend was just one example of our disconnect. My house had no football or peace that day or the next. I never saw Damon again. And my husband never brought another cheating man and their woman around me again.
