Summary

The article emphasizes the importance of stepping out of one's comfort zone to foster personal growth and fulfillment.

Abstract

The article "Your Comfort Zone Is Your Danger Zone — How to Step Out of It" discusses the detrimental effects of staying within one's comfort zone, equating it to a "danger zone" that hinders growth and success. It argues that true personal development occurs when individuals challenge themselves by embracing discomfort and taking risks. The author suggests a practical approach to this by setting a weekly challenge called the "Comfort Zone Stretch" (CZS), which involves performing one uncomfortable task per week. This method is inspired by the compound effect principle from the book "The One Thing," which posits that small, consistent actions lead to significant results over time. The article encourages readers to actively pursue life outside their comfort zones, using the metaphor of a ship in a harbor to illustrate that safety does not lead to life's greatest experiences. It concludes with a call to action for individuals to start their journey of self-improvement immediately, rather than waiting for a new year, and to share their progress with others.

Your Comfort Zone Is Your Danger Zone — How to Step Out of It

This one tactic is incredibly powerful for doing just that.

We all have a comfort zone, as it's part of being human.

It's that familiar cocoon, the place you feel safe and at home.

But did you know that it is your danger zone?

Let me explain!

Your comfort zone doesn't allow you to grow and stretch keeping you stuck in familiarity and complacency.

These are big success and fulfillment killers in life.

Stepping out of the zone

You can’t expect to grow and fulfill your true potential while staying in your comfort zone.

Dreams are built outside your comfort zone.

You have to learn to be comfortable with the uncomfortable.

It may be tempting to stay safe (in your comfort zone), but true success lies in taking risks at least smart risks, and venturing outside it.

It's the caterpillar getting out of its cocoon to become a butterfly.

In our own human way, we are butterflies in the making but the safety of the cocoon must be left for transformation to occur.

How to step outside the zone

So how do you step outside your comfort zone?

Glad you asked!

Well, I like to speak from personal experience and share what has worked for me in the laboratory of my life.

I'm forever testing things out to see what works and what doesn't.

The number one thing that has been and continues to help me step outside my comfort zone is giving myself a weekly challenge.

I call it the CZS short for the Comfort Zone Stretch.

It's simply one weekly challenge that’s uncomfortable but allows me to step out of my comfort zone.

I came up with the idea a few months ago whilst I was sitting down doing some self-reflection.

Last week’s challenge was attending a large networking event with strangers (over 100 people).

Incredibly uncomfortable but I did it and am proud of myself.

This week it's going to be finally going through my dear mom’s hospital bag with her belongings.

She died on the 30th of July this year and I’m still in shock and haven’t been able to go through her bag. It’s going to take courage to do so.

The power of the one thing

I'm a big believer in The One Thing and it's no coincidence my favorite non-fiction book of all time is The One Thing.

This book is all about teaching you to do one thing in various areas of life which when compounded over time stacks up to yield great results.

Doing just one thing each week to step outside your comfort zone adds up to 52 things as there are 52 weeks in a year.

So talk about a good stack-up!

It doesn't have to be a giant thing like jumping out of a plane, running a marathon, climbing Mount Everest, etc.

It can be small actions. These like interest in a bank account compound over time anyway.

It's always good to write down your weekly challenge — your CZS but if writing isn't your thing just keep it at the forefront of your mind.

Missing out on life

Remember by staying in your comfort zone you’re wasting opportunities and leaving a lot of life on the table.

John A. Shedd said,

“A ship in a harbor is safe but that is not what ships are built for.”

If ships never left the harbor just imagine how much they would miss out on.

Being comfortable and feeling safe is like staying in that harbor day in and day out.

You become complacent and miss out on the adventure of life.

Most people with the exception of a few like peak performers are living life from their comfort zone.

Just look around you — in your neighborhood, work, family, friends, etc.

How many of these people are truly venturing outside their comfort zone?

Not many I bet.

Watching a new Netflix series, and working from home, don't count as stepping outside your comfort zone!

Well except if you've been without a television for years and have never worked from home.

Take a bet on yourself

I think all of us need to bet on ourselves.

That is just step out and go after your dreams, ideas, etc.

It won't be easy but then life wasn't meant to be easy.

I love the way children's author Dr. Seus put it:

“You’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting,So… get on your way!”

How powerful is that?

What’s your mountain?

Make it part of your Comfort Zone Stretch and climb it.

Give yourself just one weekly challenge to step out of your comfort zone.

Don't overdo it with two, three, or four challenges.

Just stick with one.

You’ll see it is incredibly powerful and you’ll just want to keep going.

Final thoughts

Don't wait till next year to start.

Avoid the Ist of January mentality.

Start today, this week.

You have nine weeks left till the end of this year.

That’s nine weekly challenges, comfort zone stretches.

You’ll feel so much more confident at the end of the year.

Remember to share it and tell your friends and family about it.

To Creating a Better You,

Sandra D
