Your Attention Is All I Need

As I explained in my most recent article, knowing how to pay attention is one of the main elements that can transform any person into a good listener. However, do we really know what attention means? And what are the main elements involved in that process?

Attention is the activity or state in which a person focuses on a subject, another person, a group of people, or any other object. According to this research, the process of directing one’s attention towards something or someone involves three main steps: alertness, selection of information, and processing activity.

That means attention works the following way: before someone begins to pay attention to something or to another person they need to be stimulated. But they only continue to direct their attention towards that target if there are some pieces of information provided. They’ll then follow up on those pieces of information if they are given enough time and space to process them.

Let’s take a few examples, so we can illustrate this pattern:

Imagine that you heard a very common sound with which you don’t associate any potentially meaningful information, you wouldn’t pay too much attention to it because it didn’t trigger any of your feelings. However, if that sound was strange, rare, or was linked to a seemingly important idea, you would have directed your mind to it. After some time, though, if you realized it didn’t have any significance, you would forget about it.

Only if you can find implicit or explicit information linked to a given target, you can continue paying attention to it. But if you have too much information, you’ll feel overwhelmed. In that case, you are more likely to fall asleep, look for something relaxing (music, movie, go out with a friend, etc.), or stress out and become insane.

When the brain doesn’t find enough information about a stimulation, it is inclined to respond one of those two ways: 1) you’ll look for more information, which most often will have the same result as if you had too much information because you’ll look up for data that will need more clarifications. 2) You just give up because you don’t understand.

Nevertheless, be aware that any external stimulation’s meaning depends on a very complex internal process. If your mind attaches a subconscious signification to a sound or something similar to it, it will sound familiar to you even though you aren’t quite sure what it means.

Therefore, when there is no stimulation, it’s challenging to start paying attention. When the information is unclear, we get lost. And if there is too much information or we aren’t allowed enough time or breaks, we feel overwhelmed. That is, under some circumstances it can be challenging to pay attention.

Do you want to know what are the circumstances that can become a barrier to your effective attention activity? Let’s keep in touch. I am working on an article that will provide the utmost details about that matter.
