Young Sunshine

Short poems and soothing pictures from the natural world

Sunlight finds its way through tall trees in the Nisene Marks Forest near Santa Cruz, California. (Original photo by author, 2015)

Young Sunshine

Harder acorn rinds than usual this go-round, but sensual ions arrive just in time, gracefully infusing even the toughest shell.

Tree grows, takes root, blooms green in verdant summer, shelters footpaths until leaves fall, crunch-stepped back into mysterious sod, Earth ever accepting of her own.

More trees on the way, truly the way that cannot be spoken.

This is just one of many beautiful flowers in the Berkeley Rose Garden. (Original photo by author, 2009)

Haiku # 1

False self-conceptions are forlorn caterpillars; be true butterflies.

Beams of sunlight arrive on the Pacific Ocean in Aptos, California. (Original photo by author, 2015)

Haiku #2

Watch a sunset, breathe. Know that someone somewhere else inhales new morning.

A muddy hiking trail, lush greenery and a colorful sky combine for a soothing scene in Tilden Park, Berkeley, California. (Original photo by author, 2010)

Beautiful Life

Beautiful life, beautiful life, pitter-patter rainfall breaks the silence. Wind outside wind in mind wind sweeps Earth fire drinks water.

Beautiful life, my only life, downpour dominates this stormy morning. The ground gets wet the ground forgets wind spreads songs before and after.

These footprints on a hiking trail in Makanda, Illinois, evaporated mere minutes after they were left. (Original photo by author, 2017)
