Daily Prompt — “What is your favorite holiday movie? What do you love about it?”

My good friend, Nancy Oglesby, asks, “What is your favorite holiday movie? What do you love about it?”

My favorite Christmas movie, and one I watch every year, is A Christmas Story. The movie highlights the wonders of the Christmas season as seen through the eyes of young Ralphie who dreams of only one thing for Christmas— “an official Red Rider carbine action, 200 shot, range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time.”

The movie appears to be representative of the time period when I was the age of Ralphie, the mid 1960’s, and takes place in Cleveland, Ohio, not far from where I lived as a child. In fact, the house I grew up in looked a lot like Ralphie’s house. I guess you can see why I like the movie. It takes me back to my own childhood.

In fact, the house that was used in A Christmas Story is now a movie museum you can tour.

Ralphie’s brother in the movie is named Randy. A coincidence? In the movie, Randy is Ralphie’s younger brother, but their interactions surprisingly remind me of my own brother Ken, and I, but in our case, I was the older and Ken was the younger. If you watch the movie, you will see a good portrayal of family life at that time in the Midwest.

Besides being a great Christmas movie, this is also a coming-of-age story, complete with Ralphie dealing with bullies, “electric sex,” elementary school and his relationship with his parents. You’ll find out about “electric sex” when you see the movie. It’s all family fare, so don’t worry.

The movie has more than a few heartwarming moments, and if you are of “a certain age,” it’s bound to take you back to your youth. It may even bring a tear or two.

But there are also a lot of funny moments in the movie. I won’t mention them in case you haven’t seen it. I don’t want to spoil the fun.

I highly recommend A Christmas Story if you want to see glimpses of the world when it was a kinder and simpler place, and everything revolved around Ralphie convincing his parents he should have the ultimate gift any boy would want, a Red Rider BB gun.

I’ve included a video. Spoiler alert, he gets the BB gun of his dreams.

Have you seen the movie? What’s your favorite scene? I’d like to know!
