You’d Better Show Your True Colors (Literally!) When Visiting TCM Doctors
The ancient wisdom of “seeing” Inside from Outside
Hey ladies, imagine this: you’ve got an upcoming appointment with a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) doctor. Perhaps you are considering your usual makeup routine — foundation for an even tone, concealer to mask any imperfection, and a touch of blush for a healthy glow…
But wait a second.
When you’re about to visit a TCM doctor, all these cosmetics can be set aside. In fact, it’s in your best interest to show your true colors!
Why, you might ask?
Because your natural facial complexion could reveal valuable information for TCM doctors to decode your health.
Observing is key in TCM diagnostics
In modern medical practice, diagnostic testing plays a crucial role in assessing health and identifying diseases. On the other hand, TCM, with its ancient roots, established the diagnostic practice of “seeing” the internal health state through external manifestations.
TCM’s diagnostic methodology is called Four Examinations (望闻问切). It’s one key framework in TCM and remains the cornerstone of TCM practice today.
Observing (望) is the first step in Four Examinations. In fact, facial complexion is a crucial sign among other observable attributes such as general appearance, body build, vibe, tongue, eye, etc.
Fascinatingly, there’s a wise saying in TCM, “望而知之谓之神”, which conveys the idea that perceiving health status through observation alone is akin to possessing divine insight. It underscores the remarkable power of keen observation and intuitive discernment.
Fundamentals of Seeing Inside from Outside
“诸病于内,必形于外” is one essential TCM principle. It means all ailments and imbalances inside can manifest as visible signs and symptoms on the external body. The timeless phrase originated from Neijing, the TCM classic that dates back more than two thousand years.
The Inside-Outside connection is woven into the TCM framework, particularly through the Five Elements and the meridian system.

TCM Five Elements is a comprehensive framework linking many phenomena of the human body and the natural world based on their characteristics or functions. For instance, this concept establishes connections among the internal organ systems, colors, sensory organs, plus many other factors.
In addition, the meridian system serves as the body’s communication network. This sophisticated web extends from head to toe, interior to exterior, with several meridians passing through the face. It’s the foundational framework for various therapeutic treatments including acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion, therapeutic massage, and Gua Sha. They can be applied to address imbalances, reduce pain, and enhance circulation to promote well-being.
Facial complexion
According to TCM, organ systems functioning harmoniously often manifest as a vibrant and healthy facial complexion with a clear, smooth, radiant tone.
On the other hand, changes or irregularities in the facial complexion could signal potential imbalances, disruptive circulation, and potential health issues.
For instance, the presence of a yellowish color combined with the absence of a natural radiance in the facial complexion could indicate of potential imbalances or issues within the Spleen and Stomach systems. These organs are linked to the Soil element in TCM and play an essential role in digestion and nutrient transformation. Additionally, the Stomach meridian winds through a substantial portion of the face. A facial complexion of this color might suggest compromised digestion and weakened Spleen and Stomach functions such as poor appetite and various digestive disturbances.
When a facial complexion appears somewhat greenish and dull, it could indicate potential imbalances within the Liver/Gallbladder systems and associated meridians. These organ systems are aligned with the Wood element in TCM and are vital for the smooth circulation of Qi and blood throughout the body.
Other variations in facial complexion, including paleness, a very dark hue, and a deep red color without a radiant tone could also suggest potential imbalances within the body.
External manifestations, such as facial complexion, can reflect internal imbalances or health concerns. When combined with other information accumulated in Four Examinations, TCM doctors could construct a comprehensive health profile of an individual for personalized care. Moreover, this practice could potentially unveil early ailments and imbalances to allow preventative care before the problems worsen and become evident through conventional diagnostic tests.
Remember, our natural face can speak volumes with ancient wisdom on our side!
