PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

You Malign Me — I am Not Drooling over Next Door’s Rabbits!

Enthusiastic Fuchsias, Colouring Book Day, and Bronze Water Lilies with the Most Amazing Verdigris

I do love fuchsia buds — they always look particularly promising and enthusiastic about what they’re shortly going to reveal.

Jack with head through fence; Jack with head NOT through fence; Jack sniffing grass — photos by Susan Alison

Jack was caught red-pawed!!! With his head through the fence drooling over next door’s rabbits! An outraged yell (from me) hit the evening air and suddenly that’s not what he’s interested in at all — no, he was just, uh, just, uh, checking the perimeters to make sure they were safe. And then, of course, just sniffing around in the grass. Which was all he wanted to do in the first place.

He wasn’t imagining a late supper at all. Of course not!

Photo of intruder dog and of bronze water lilies in the garden of the home — by Susan Alison

Jack-dog and I drove to Malvern to visit someone. The visit has to be outside in their garden. While we were waiting for our person to arrive, Jack took major and vociferous objection to the intruder in the garden — above left. He wasn’t reassured until I actually approached the interloper and poked it.

I was fascinated by the bronze water lily leaves in the pond, and the very thick verdigris they had developed. I couldn’t help but poke them as well — only to find they’re not bronze, and it’s not verdigris — it’s slimy algae of various sorts. Ewww. It did look good, though.

A corgi traditional line-art colouring book, and a painting of a corgi dog who was only interested in her colouring despite the exciting cat-chasing movie on the telly. Pics and painting by Susan Alison

Last week included National Colouring Book Day — I create colouring books, but I’d been painting for a living for a number of years before I realised they were such a huge pastime for adults, and are often recommended for destressing.

It’s only because I got into them (in the end!) that I discovered such things as ‘greyscale colouring’ — I’d never heard of it before. It is a world so very different to the last time I coloured anything, which is a very long time ago when it was all about keeping within the lines. And when it was all wax crayons, rather than the enormous range of colouring tools there are now.

Last week also contained International Cat Day. Kitties know they should be worshipped as gods, but our two, confident in their superior position in society, were content to celebrate with new hats.

In 2020 Dennett started the Photo-a-Day Challenge to help combat the pandemic blues. She takes photos every day and chooses one or two to represent the day. Then, she adds a one-word descriptor and maybe, some narrative. It is a simple way to observe and preserve.

It’s about noticing and appreciating your environment and sharing it with us, as these photographers and story-tellers have:
