You Can Still Make Money on Medium
7 Strategies That Are Working For Me On The Platform
I earned $3.89 on Medium on March 20, 2020.
As the pandemic started, I decided to go all-in on Medium. Now that March 2021 is over and the earnings have come out, I noticed that my income went up over 65 times since one year ago. I had the best earning month in March of 2021 and doubled my previous highest month of earnings.
I hate to talk about money on Medium because as I wrote before, who actually talks about their earnings in person? If you don’t talk about how much you earn in your real life, why talk about how much you earn publicly?
You can read my previous article here:
I feel like I need to mention the income to some extent to give you perspective since all of the top writers are lamenting about Medium these days and how their incomes have plunged. I want to let you know that for many people that started a year ago and have stuck with Medium, we are seeing our views and earnings going up.
More importantly, I want to share with you what’s working on Medium for me. I’ve started helping other writers on their Medium journey as well and notice some similar things which all of us can improve upon.
If you’re trying to become a better writer, earn more, and use Medium to take you to the next level of your writing, then please consider using these strategies as well. These are the strategies that have worked for me and led to my best month of earnings.
Consistent publishing
I truly believe that consistent publishing affects your Medium journey more than anything else. If you’re trying to improve your earnings on Medium, please consider publishing regularly. For me, the sweet spot at the moment is 15 articles a month. The reason to publish more is to give more of your articles a chance to do well. Most of our articles each month will not be loved by all but you just need a couple a month that resonate with your audience.
The more important reason for consistent publishing is that I’m fairly certain that Medium rewards people who produce more regular content for it. It’s the one thing that drives their platform so you can imagine if you were Medium, you’d want your consistent content creators to reap slightly more of the rewards. I’m convinced from what I hear and my own experience that if you publish more, Medium works a little more to get your articles in front of more people. Consistency in publishing boosts your views on Medium. The Medium algorithm, from my experience, rewards, a frequent posting schedule.

Building community with other writers
Initially and throughout your Medium experience, you’ll find that there are many other reader-writers on the platform. This means that readers on the platform are also the writers on it. The way to get your initial pull of readers is to read other writers. I don’t know if I’m the exception or the rule here but I will share something that I know works. When you read my writing, I will most certainly read yours. This is simply a strategy of reading the people you know about and know exist on the platform.
When you read the writing of other writers, other writers will read your writing. Other writers are the ones who can recommend your writing, share your writing, and will more likely comment on your writing. Medium can be lonely in the beginning. The best way to build up your following is to network and engage with other writers on the platform. This strategy also increases the number of people reading your articles. Look for like-minded writers who are writing about topics that interest you.
Daily idea creation
I’ve found idea creation to be like a muscle and this is a requisite for Medium success. Where do good ideas come from? How do you spark creativity every day? I’ve noticed that the more I write and the more I’m focused on generating ideas for articles, the more ideas come up. If you get into the habit of coming up with ideas, you’ll generate more ideas.
One technique that I’ve used to generate ideas is to capture ideas that I do come up with. Throughout the day, you may get shots of inspiration or creativity. Start writing them down or capturing them wherever you are so you have new pieces to write. Also, set a goal of coming up with 5 to 10 headline ideas a day. The habit of doing this will generate new and unique pieces for you to write.
Being courageous with your perspective
You likely are not writing things that you want to because of a fear of writing them. You may feel judged or wonder what other people will think when you put your opinions and perspectives out there. We are in the online world after all and people can take offense at any moment, especially when you write something controversial or bold.
I’ve found that when I took on the system or challenged a way of thinking, my posts stood out and did well. When you have a unique, controversial or vulnerable post, it tends to do better on Medium. I’d encourage you take a risk and share more than you had planned. Offer that insight or experience you had. People want to know more about our lives as humans and will read more interesting and unique takes of people’s lives. It’s hard to go there but please consider, going there.
Not giving away your main points in the headline
Your headlines have a surprising amount of influence on if your article gets read or not. One common mistake I see people doing is sharing everything about your article in the headline. If you share your entire view and perspective in the headline, people are not going to read the rest of your article. Your headline should raise questions. The place to offer solutions and answer questions is in the rest of your post. Work on headline creation and be wary of giving it all away in your headline.
Having said that, just know that headlines, in general, can make or break posts. If you want to get better at writing them, check out this post I wrote on writing addictive headlines.
Narrow your topics to pull in your tribe
I’m more convinced that a narrow set of topics will help draw in your readers. It’s the same when you’re a consumer in search of a service. It’s why you go to certain restaurants and visit certain professionals that you need services from. They do something unique or different than everyone else. They most likely provide the most specialized kind of service you can imagine. Dentists for kids, mechanics for luxury cars, or pizza parties for teenagers. You’re looking for the most unique thing for you.
Same with readers. They’ll follow you and read you if you give them the same types of topics and information. Yes, you can likely do well on Medium without narrowing your topics, but you’ll get to success a lot faster if you can narrow down your ideas and let your audience know what to expect. You’ll draw in the true fans and the most interested readers who will read everything you write.
Find a way to communicate with your readers
Just because people follow you on Medium means nothing. I don’t even think Medium shows all of your posts to the people who follow you. You have to find a way to get your posts to your readers. Find and follow your readers on social media. Engage with them and share your articles with them on the various platforms.
Even better, get an email list going so people can sign up to get your posts. If they are following you, you know that they want to read your writing. If they want to read your writing, give them more opportunities to receive your articles and read them. Bonus Tip: Have a reason to write
You can’t make Medium about the earnings. If I noticed that I only earned $3.89 at this time last year and I was doing Medium just for the money, I would have never stayed on the platform.
You have to find some internal and inherent reason for writing on the platform that has nothing to do with money because the money is just not there at the beginning.
You must tap into wanting to be a writer, tap into your passion for writing, tap into your desire to want to be the author you have the potential of becoming. You have to work on the craft of becoming the best writer you can be. Or like in my case, I want to use writing to help people in their lives in a certain way. I have another blog off Medium entirely dedicated to relationships. That blog grows based on the quality of my writing and blogging. To be a better blogger and more prolific writer for my audience on my other site, I show up on Medium.
In summary
There is a lot of uncertainty and change in the platform at the moment. Many top writers on Medium have seen their earnings fall significantly and are letting us know that they’re about to give up on Medium. What they’re not noticing is that they may have stopped writing regularly on Medium. They may not be engaging with the community. They may not be narrowing their topics. They may not be focusing on their headlines.
There are plenty of basic and fundamental things we can all do to achieve success and increase our earnings on the platform. There’s no other place that quite works like Medium for writers. You write about the topics you love and get paid for it. Almost every other type of writing online has someone telling you what to write and instructing you to write it a certain way.
There’s still money to be made on Medium but don’t make your journey all about the money. Focus on doing everything you can in your power to become the most engaging and prolific writer on the platform. The money will follow.
