Summary

The article discusses the nuanced relationship between success in publishing and the platform or publisher one uses, emphasizing that both independent and big publisher platforms can lead to success depending on various factors.

Abstract

The author reflects on the paradoxical advice circulating in the publishing community, particularly on Medium, regarding the correlation between publishing success and the choice between self-publishing and using big publishers. The text suggests that success is multifaceted, influenced by factors such as follower count, content quality, visibility, and sometimes sheer luck or financial resources. It also critiques the oversimplification of success in publishing, noting that both viral sensations and well-researched pieces can coexist and that the publishing landscape is complex and influenced by social dynamics, market trends, and individual author circumstances.

Opinions

  • Success in publishing is not solely determined by the choice of publisher but also by the number of followers, content quality, and visibility.
  • The publishing industry is subject to trends and social dynamics, where popularity can sometimes overshadow content quality.
  • There is a critique of the publishing industry's tendency to favor a small group of highly followed writers, which can limit opportunities for new voices.
  • The article points out the irony in contradictory advice given to writers, highlighting that both self-publishing and publishing with big names can lead to success.
  • It is suggested that success can also be influenced by an author's personal brand, social media presence, and the ability to engage an audience across various platforms.
  • The author expresses skepticism about the idea that there are only two paths to success in publishing, advocating for a more nuanced understanding of the industry.
  • The text implies that some successful stories may lack substance but benefit from strategic marketing or viral trends.
  • There is a mention of the role of research and luck in achieving publishing success, as well as the potential need for financial stability to dedicate time to writing and marketing.

You are Most Successful not Publishing with Big Publishers

You are also most successful publishing with big publishers. Clickbait much?

So, there I was. Minding my own business. Popping some popcorn and funneling some funnel cake. When, out of nowhere, something came along. It was so mysterious! A light shown in my curtain as if it had all the answers I could ever need.

But, what was it? I pondered out loud, quietly, but from my balcony, overlooking a desert.

I opened the curtain of my balcony and there it was, staring at me, from it’s closed eye in the back of its head.

It was bullsh** and it asked me if I was stupid.

So, no joke, I have legitimately heard that “you are most successful publishing with big publishers” on Medium and that “you are not successful publishing with big publishers”. What is the truth? It actually depends on how many people see your story — of course. So, if someone has 1,000 followers they will be seen more than me, unless I’m with a big publisher and they are not. And if I have good content.

But also true, those writers just want money, so they oppose other stories and people take a peek to see if what they say is true.

Allow me. Please, take a seat and investigate further.

  • One moment a woman is not famous, the next moment after creating an Instagram account, showing a made-up perfect existence in different locations to stay fresh, that all changes. She now ends up on Wiki pages she hopes does not exist, but whatever brings a paycheck.
  • Everyone knows that when someone is more popular than any publishing company they don’t need a publisher or marketing team. Take Matthew McConaughey’s book for example. That’s common logic, he did not need a marketer, just an Instagram post about his book and podcasts come running.
  • Take a BS nonprofit with a celebrity who gives a speech, versus a nonprofit that could do magic, but had no cute bucket of charm or finances. See who the masses think is right.
  • Take military Psychological Warfare teams creating propaganda in anther country while tipping the media to the story and now all America thinks it’s true (this actually happens…)
  • Take some of my Medium stories that have literally up to 5 years of research, versus a Medium story talking about not being part of a big publisher and being published in a big publisher and getting over 8,000 claps — conveniently convincing people to follow said publication, but NOT apply to be a writer so the publication can stay with a small group of highly followed people. You know, to keep the writer list small. Nice one, really got me there — not!
  • There are stories that say single people can speak into marriage and stories that say single people cannot speak into marriages — as if single people have no morals or principles in which to teach their children as single mothers or fathers due to the death of a spouse. Really got me there, not! Or just that married people were never single to start out with, with ethics, such as humility, kindness, communication, no cheating, etc. nope, they were born married and above the rest — aside from the 50% divorce rate. The divorce rate does not say anything about us single people, that sh*t falls on you married people. You will join us on the dark side, Luke!
  • I can go on all day just like the energizer bunny on peyote.

Point is, it’s all luck or research (and you will have to have money to take time off of work to figure it out). Or you have to be female, put on a smile, and publish a story telling guys what the 4 keys to your heart is.

Just to publish “don’t forget my birthday. Please follow me on all my accounts, different content on every platform. Donate to my Patreon”— but in reality, she’s single — with a kid, and actually hates the idea of letting another guy in again because she was played by a f*ckstick and is too proud to admit that her jock had a chemical imbalance in the brain (in which all psychologists to ever exist have wrote about for decades). And all her guy friends already knew it. But, his overgrown neck was not a dead giveaway and she thought she was heading into a perfect life… (got me there, not!) Then he moved to a beach in South America selling surfboards and married a village girl who is fine with him swimming, fishing, and boating all day. Then, in the evening the village women cook up the fish, pay employees with tourist money, and he and her party with the fam until 12 am. (A Special Forces Soldier’s dream, by the way)

It is just luck because some of the dumbest stories I’ve ever read in my life have went viral and many stories out there are literally debunking it. Both stories went viral — at the same time! According to the dictionary that’s called an oxymoron. In physics, it’s called a theory that will never pass the science board.

  • If most men follow publisher X and publisher X has done some analytical tracking software finding, they can then only publish the major fan content. You could be a new guy and your first story can be a major hit.
  • Or, if you were Kim Kardashian and you self-published on Medium with the title “Baby Chickens do not come from Hens, but Meerkats” you would have the world believing it.
  • Or, if you were someone who other people wanted to be, that would also be easy for you. Like those who made $20,000 on Medium due to having a job where you can work 20 actual-hours a week and get paid $60,000 a year still.

If you published duck hunting in Barbie Publishing, you probably will not make much money. But, if you were published in the largest duck hunting catalog that is distributed to hunting lodges and gun stores, you would be famous for that season. Even if you were not that good.

There are a lot of variables, too many, for things to be so oversimplified, an idiom, or to say “there are only two answers to a question and I have the right one. Click on me, read me! There is no other answer in existence, I’m basically the savior of money and I grant you salvation if you pay me. If you have any other questions, refer to me. I have all the relevant answers for essentially all things that are important for your success. I need you, I quit my corporate job to only use sales here, too”.
