WRITING PROMPTS — GETTING STARTED

Writing Prompts for Aspiring Writers (1)

WRITING THOSE FIRST LINES …

Once upon a time … there was a writer who couldn’t write their first line.

Sometimes an opener just won’t come. So, what to do?

1. JUMP IN

I try jumping into a scene that’s already in my head, no matter whereabouts in the story it appears. You can always come back to your opening, informed by the new information the scene may provide.

No will ever know in what order you wrote your story except you.

2. LOOK AROUND

Try a timer (set your phone to one minute). Have your favourite colour marker and write one word for everything you see around you, whether it be a cat, a plant, a door, a laptop, a photograph, a coffee mug, a newspaper headline. Pick three and try to compose an intriguing first line.

3. AND WRITE …

From my suggestions, I’ve put together:

‘I saw the news earlier. A government laptop had been stolen and I knew the thief … ‘

Now it’s your turn. Good luck!

This is the first in a series of writing tips and articles (Writing Prompts for Aspiring Writers) created by Susi Moore. Whether you’re drawing a blank or looking for a little inspiration, Susi produces ideas and original prompts for all aspiring writers.
