Writing for Money is Motivational, and Medium Writers Don’t Want to Admit It
We all like earning money. It’s not a secret!
Remember the first time you saw one of your articles earn you 2 cents? It was the happiest moment ever. You knew there was money to be made in writing!
One of the greatest things about writing on a platform such as Medium is that you get to post your work and get compensated for it. Apparently, in the first few years that Medium came out, people weren’t making any money at all.
They are writing because they love to write.
Don’t get me wrong, I love writing because it’s therapeutic and brings me joy, but that paycheck at the end of every month is incredibly motivational.
My Paychecks Since March
I discovered the Medium platform in November, but only found out about the partner program in March, so I began monetizing my work. It did not start out sexy at all!
It took a lot of grinding and figuring out what type of niche I wanted to dive into. The truth is, I don’t have a niche, and I am a wildcard when it comes to writing, which is why growth has been fairly slow as I approach my first 1,000 followers.
Notice the trend in my earnings. There’s constant growth throughout the entire year and that’s great to see. It all comes with writing daily and trying out new styles of writing!
Clearly, my paycheck in March wasn’t anything sexy to write home about. It was 13 cents! We all have to start somewhere, don’t we? Only one of my articles made me money that month, but it showed me that there was money to be made.
Writing has been one of my favorite side hustles and hobbies of mine that I plan on continuing to do for a very long time. I see the power of compound interest.
Compound Interest
When you put your writing into investment terms, you can see that every article you write contributes to your growth in pay. I’m not saying that quantity equals a higher pay-raise, but it helps your entire situation.
The more you write, the better you’ll get. Many investors in the stock market wish they could’ve invested $10,000 in Apple back in 1987 because it would mean that they’re millionaires today.
If you write fifty articles in 2020 and continue to scale your content and write 75 next year, you’re going to most likely triple your income by the time it’s 2025. Have that long-term perspective. Not many people do, and they’ll quit before they get to experience the “Medium Magic”.
Your Articles Kick-Ass
If you’re writing, you’re kicking ass, and anyone who has anything bad to say about it doesn’t matter. Everyone’s going to have something negative to say or something to pick at, but you shouldn’t let that deter you.
Creating content can be scary because you put yourself out there and feel vulnerable. You never know if people are going to love what you wrote or hate and disagree with it.
I used to compare myself to top writers and people who have been around the block for several more years than me, but then I stopped caring about them and focused on myself. That’s how the magic happens.

When looking at all of my stories, the majority of the earnings happened in the first 1/3 of the article’s lifetime but had steady earnings throughout the remainder of the time.
You don’t have to expect your article to make you hundreds of dollars within the first few months because people will need your spicy stories at different points in time.
Trust the process. Don’t get impatient, just write and don’t stop doing it.
The Endgame of Money on Medium
You like making money. I like making money. We both enjoy writing.
All of the above is true, and it’s just a fact.
When you have more money, you can do more in life.
People enjoy reading quality stories by qualified people.
Don’t ever stop writing.
Your Medium earnings will grow as long as you stick around.
Be different. Be yourself. Be unique.

Don’t compare to others.
