Before You Quit Medium… Read This.
Feeling discouraged by your view count? Here’s exactly how to force your way into a “lucky” break.

Almost all new writers on Medium quit within their first year.
It’s not because they are trash-tier writers or lacking vision.
It’s actually due to the human condition.
I mean, I almost didn’t make it past day 3.

There’s a well-studied concept in psychology called hedonic adaption.
Hedonic adaption is the reason you always need more to be happy.
That fancy $750 blender you were super-hype about a few months ago —
Probably just a blender now.
It essentially a never-ending treadmill of desires that prevents us from being satisfied.
Or in this case, writing on Medium.
I got 10 views, but I’m not at 100 yet.
I got 100 views, but I’m not at 1000 yet.
Eventually, you become discouraged and quit.
The solution?
Don’t focus on the numbers.
Focus on the action of writing.
Here’s why:
You probably have hundreds of thoughts and ideas floating around your cranium throughout the day.
You’re probably not even consciously aware of it.
So how do you access those thoughts?
In the primordial state, a lot of our thoughts are nonsense.
Thoughts only become valuable when you are forced to articulate them.
It converts nonsense to logic.
The added bonus of explaining your thoughts —
You understand them.

Writing on Medium allows you to create brand-new content all from explaining your thoughts.
This is a valuable skill (copywriting) that you will become very good at with practice over time.
When you have original content + skill —
The opportunities are endless.
Branching out becomes very easy in the later stages.
You wanna make YouTube videos one day?
TikToks?
Sure. You already have content to transform into other mediums (no pun).
Just make sure that you don’t catch shiny object syndrome before you master the art of writing.

How to get lucky:
Dr. James Austin discusses the four kinds of luck in his book “Chase, Chance, and Creativity: The Lucky Art of Novelty.”
Naval Ravikant’s summarizes these concepts in his “How to Get Rich” podcast series.
I’ll simplify it further.
- Blind Luck (you instantly go viral)
- Motion (you write hundreds of articles)
- Skill (you can identify what makes a great article)
- Individuality (you are a one-of-one brand)
So how do you get lucky?
Write.
By writing articles you’re generating energy and motion.
Practice will develop skill.
And motion + skill will result in a reputable brand that attracts even more motion like a magnet.
So even if you literally are sitting at 0 views right now —
Keep pushing.
