Feedium is a Medium publication that welcomes guest writers to contribute articles on writing, blogging, Medium, and book reviews, with a promise of reaching a large audience and a straightforward submission process.

Abstract

Feedium, established in 2019 by J.J. Pryor, is a Medium publication dedicated to providing insights into writing, blogging, and navigating Medium successfully. It has grown to reach approximately 50,000 readers monthly, accumulating over 80,000 minutes of read-time. The publication is open to guest writers who align with its themes, offering a platform for their work to be seen by thousands without the hassle of extensive editing or rejection. The submission process involves commenting on a specific article with one's Medium username, after which writers can submit their articles directly to the publication. The publication also has a Facebook group for additional promotion and engagement among writers.

Opinions

  • The editor, J.J. Pryor, values a hands-off approach, emphasizing laziness in editing but a commitment to publishing all relevant submissions.
  • There is a strong preference for content related to writing, blogging, Medium, or book reviews, with a note that articles solely about Medium are unlikely to be distributed.
  • The editor encourages the use of humor and personality in articles, suggesting that "normal is boring" and that writers should feel free to express their opinions and go on rants.
  • There is an expectation of professionalism in communication, with repeated emails about submission status being discouraged.
  • The editor seeks to maintain a work-friendly environment, requesting that content avoid graphic or offensive material.
  • Writers are encouraged to use the publication's Facebook group for additional exposure and to participate in a weekly contest for extra views.
  • The editor requests that writers follow both the publication and themselves (J.J. Pryor) on Medium for additional support and engagement.
  • The editor uses a referral link for Medium membership sign-ups, offering it as a way for readers to show appreciation, with the incentive of "eternal love and blessings" in return.

Submission guidelines for Feedium — what we’re looking for and how to apply

Welcome to Feedium! I started this publication back in the winter of 2019 as a place to collect useful information about navigating and succeeding on Medium.

Over time, it expanded to include blogging and writing as well. I was researching the hell out of writing, SEO, blogging, and how to navigate this new world I plopped myself into.

And it’s been going well! The publication currently reaches about 50,000 people a month with over 80,000 minutes of read-time between them.

I’m ecstatic to have helped thousands of people learn the ins and outs of Mediuming, and I’m more than happy to host guest writers with the same idea too.

And just in case you haven’t signed up as a full member on Medium yet, I’d love if you did through my referral link. I get a small commission at no extra cost to you. You get eternal love and blessings from a non-lizard person in exchange. Sounds fair to me, non?

Changes to Feedium

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be reformating the look and feel of the publication to make it a bit cleaner of an experience. But as for you, if you’re keen to share your thoughts about writing, blogging, Medium, or book reviews, this is a fantastic place to start.

In the navigation panel, I’ve always kept one entire area for ‘Guest Writers’. If your name isn’t J.J. Pryor and you wish to have your work shown in Feedium, this is where it will go (in addition to trending and new sections like ‘Book Reviews’).

If you are interested, please know I have a few simple philosophies about running this publication:

  1. I’m lazy
  2. Please don’t email me to ask to join as a writer please, read the instructions here instead and I’ll love you forever. I’ll love you even more if you sign up using my referral link so I can earn an extra coffee a month. Not one of those fancy machi ball crappucinnos though. More like a thimble of coffee at Starbucks. Also, it doesn’t cost you anything extra — win win!
  3. I may take a few days to post your article, but I will publish everything (as long as it's related and not gibberish). As I only publish a few posts from guest writers every day, your article has a great chance to be seen by thousands of people.
  4. I’m lazy — I won’t edit your work and I won’t reject it either, 99% of the time.

The rare occasion I do reject work is when it’s:

  1. Gibberish.
  2. Not about writing, blogging, Medium, or book reviews.
  3. You keep messaging me 50 times a day asking when it will be published←Hint: Don’t do this to any editor. It’s a quick way to never be published again.

Some other things to know

If your article is about Medium itself, which 95% of these articles are on Feedium, you have a higher chance of hitting the lottery than getting curated (now called ‘distributed’).

Because it’s unlikely to get distributed, you also don’t have to abide by all of the normal rules to follow, if that’s your intention.

That’s why a lot of my stories here will include weird humor, jokes, and funny pictures. I like to make people laugh while teaching. Normal is boring.

So feel free to write your opinions, make jokes, go on rants, or just provide really meaningful and helpful articles.

Also, please keep it safe for work-ish. By that I mean, no extremely rude references, no graphic sex stuff, no sexism, racism, insulting other Medium writers by name, etc. I have no problem with people publishing these topics, just not on Feedium.

I don’t mind risque jokes (if they’re somewhat subtle or indirect) but if your whole article is an allusion to a sex act I’m going to reject it.

Just keep it somewhat sane, please. This isn’t 4chan so I won’t be publishing anything too crazy or vile or implying I’m a lizard person.

Outside of that, welcome to the pub!

So how do I submit to the Feedium publication on Medium?

If you’re relatively new to Medium, you might not know how the publishing thing works.

First, you need to be added as a writer on a publication by an editor. In this case, that will be me, J.J. Pryor.

Second, the editor will need to know your username so they can find you in Medium’s system. My username for example is ‘@jjpryor’ — but many people chose complex names instead.

Your username isn’t your display name unless you chose it carefully as such. As an editor — this makes it hard/difficult to find people. Please don’t make it hard/difficult for me to add you.

Thirdly, if this all sounds okay for you, then please comment on this article that you want to be added and include your username so I can copy and paste it.

Fourthly, when you’re finished writing your article about writing, Medium, or blogging — you can go to the little 3 dots up top on your screen, click it, and then click ‘Add to publication.’ In there you’ll see Feedium (if I’ve added you as a writer) — select that, then hit the little green ‘Submit’ button when you’re done.

Fiftharooni, I only add people once or twice a month because it’s time-consuming and I struggle with procrastination constantly.

Add in your tags and you’re off to the races.

If you don’t use all 5 tags, I might add in the ‘Feedium’ tag. I’m not sure if it helps, but I’ll do it anyway ‘cuz lizards are dicks.

Oh and I’d super appreciate it if you follow me (J.J. Pryor), the publication (Feedium), or join our Facebook group. Only if you’re cool though.

If you do all of the above, I may or may not fall in love with you.

To rehash, for those that like to skim:

  1. If you want to be a writer on Feedium, your pieces will go into the ‘Guest Writers’ section as well as trending/new sections/Book Reviews
  2. I’m lazy. I don’t edit stuff, so please keep this in mind. This is an opportunity for you to reach a new audience, not to get your work cleaned up.
  3. If you want to be added as a writer so you can submit pieces to Feedium, please reply to this article with your username and say something to make me laugh.
  4. It may take me 1–10 days to get to it as I have a life and don't get paid for this. Usually, I’ll publish a guest post within 2–3 days. Emailing me more than once about the same thing will get you on my naughty list. Don’t get on my naughty list.
  5. We have a Feedium Facebook group where you can promote your articles and win a weekly contest to have 1 article pinned to the top for lots of extra views — check us out!
  6. Don’t forget to follow me (J.J. Pryor) and the Feedium publication for extra love points
  7. This picture was #25 when I searched for ‘Sexy’ on UnSplash. I don’t know why.
