Would A Random $500 Bonus Increase Your Daily Productivity?
Why it might be a strategy employers use to ramp up morale in 2021

Imagine unlocking your phone, swiping into an app, and routinely looking at your monthly earnings at the end of the month.
You probably know the exact numbers you’re going to see — and what you probably won’t. An extra $1000? $500?
How much would it take to make a difference?
Even an extra $20 might be enough to make you smile and cause you to get to work a few minutes earlier and maybe even improve your mood while you’re there.
I think we can all agree that we wish there would be a magic amount added when we least expect it — which is what some Medium writers experienced this month.

For some Medium writers with high reader engagement, an extra $500 was waiting for them in their monthly deposit summary.
What is high engagement? How did they determine the metrics for giving out this bonus?
When I first saw friends in writer groups posting about it — asking if it was a scam because they could barely believe their eyes — I had a good laugh.
I’ve been pursuing a few side hustles and working my regular 9–5, and it made me wonder if I should have continued my 30-day writing challenge from last year.
If I had kept writing, would I have garnered enough engagement to have that $500 in my bank account right now?

This begs the question- does the chance of a random $500 bonus for increasing company productivity make you want to be better?
Would it brighten your mood?
Would it make your coffee taste better?
Would you be more willing to work with coworkers that normally grind your gears in order to be a team player?
Would you see colors you didn’t know existed?
Will you be able to jump higher?
Get more done than you ever thought was possible?
Maybe — and maybe not.
As with most things, I’m sure the truth here lies halfway in between.

I guess it worked on me because I now have a few questions about reader engagement:
Clearly, reader engagement matters to publishing companies — it’s how they earn an audience to keep their content alive.
It has me thinking:
- Should I start another 30-day writing challenge?
- Should I just write one article a week?
- Do readers have to comment on articles, or just read and clap?
And most of all, why not try to boost my productivity, anyway?
2020 and 2021 have been one big blur. If $500 wouldn’t motivate you at all at this point — you should probably look for a new job.
It makes me wonder if being a team player is what it takes to get you there — and hopefully, you’ll talk about it so the rest of the team shapes up too.
I’m part of the latter group there — and it might just whip me into shape and bring me out of my intermittent writing cycle.
You never know that $500 could wait for you next month.
Would you be more productive if you knew your company might offer you an extra $500 at random?
