My Eye-Opening Experience on World Consumer Rights Day

Exploring the importance of market surveillance and the role it plays in protecting consumer rights

Today is World Consumer Rights Day, and as someone who has worked on EU-funded market surveillance projects in the past, I can tell you this is no easy feat.

During my time working on EU-funded market surveillance projects in Brussels, I learned a lot about this topic

As part of my role, I collaborated with European market surveillance authorities (MSAs) to ensure products and services met safety standards.

The projects’ technical experts worked with MSAs from several member states to test a wide range of toys and identify any potential hazards, such as small parts that could pose a choking risk or the presence of toxic materials.

When they found a problem, those MSAs would work with manufacturers to help them address the issue and make their products safer for children.

It was incredibly satisfying to know I was making a real difference in protecting consumers.

Furthermore, working in Brussels meant collaborating with people from all over Europe, and sometimes communication wasn’t a problem, as we were all fluent in English.

Of course, there were also challenges to the task at hand.

Market surveillance projects require a lot of time, money, and expertise to carry out effectively.

Thankfully, EU funding was there to support our work in helping consumers.

We wouldn’t have been able to carry out the extensive testing and research required without the support of European Institutions like DG GROW.

Being an ex-pat in Brussels had its hardships, and one of the most significant challenges I faced was during the Brussels Bombings in 2016.

I was on the subway when the attacks took place at Molenbeek station, just one stop away from my regular stop.

It was a traumatic experience, but I persevered because I knew my work was vital for our safety.

As someone who values consumer rights, it was an honor to be part of this work.

I hope my efforts have made a real difference in improving the safety and quality of products and services for people all over Europe.

The role of market surveillance in protecting consumers

The NGO I worked for strived to help MSAs identify potential hazards and carry out thorough testing in certified laboratories.

But market surveillance isn’t just about catching dangerous products after they hit the market.

It’s also about preventing them from being sold in the first place.

This requires a proactive approach, such as setting and enforcing safety standards, and monitoring product quality throughout the supply chain.

Unfortunately, not all countries have the same level of market surveillance in place.

This is where organizations like the EU come in.

By providing funding for market surveillance projects, the EU is helping to ensure consumers all over Europe are protected.

But there’s still work to be done.

In many cases, market surveillance is still playing catch-up with new and emerging products and services.

Today, I want to raise awareness about this topic.

So let’s take a minute on this day to reflect on the value of consumer rights and the work needed to safeguard them.

The future of market surveillance

During my stay in Brussels, there was a time when our NGO was working with around 30 MSAs to identify and address safety concerns within a vast array of products.

Those projects were called “Joint Actions.”

By pooling our resources and the expertise of several technical facilitators, we were able to take swift action and protect consumers around the world.

I believe we should focus our efforts on several challenges that the future of market surveillance and consumer protection will bring.

Let’s start with product traceability.

Following the e-commerce boom and the rise of global supply chains, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to track products from the manufacturer to the end consumer.

This makes it challenging to identify potential safety issues and take action. So, we need to invest in new technologies and processes enabling us to trace products more effectively and efficiently.

Next up are emerging technologies.

It’s crucial to make sure new products and services are trustworthy and fulfill the required specifications.

Continuous research and development will be needed for this, along with cooperation between MSAs and manufacturers.

Finally, we must talk about market surveillance ethics and data privacy. There’s growing concern about preserving consumer privacy and upholding their rights while we increasingly rely on technology to spot possible threats.

A careful balancing act between individual rights and public safety seems crucial from my perspective.

Concluding remarks

I invite you to create awareness of the role of these organizations in enforcing safety standards.

You can do your part by becoming informed and calling on our governments to take action to protect our rights.

On this World Consumer Rights Day, let’s celebrate the progress we’ve made and engage ourselves in the work ahead.
