Summary

The web content discusses the complex personal history and allegations of sexual assault against Woody Allen, juxtaposed with his prolific film career, as well as the controversial relationships within the Farrow family, particularly focusing on Dylan Farrow's persistent claims against Allen and his subsequent marriage to her sister, Soon-Yi Previn.

Abstract

The article delves into the tumultuous history of Woody Allen, detailing his contentious personal life, including the incestuous relationship with his then-partner Mia Farrow's adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, which became public knowledge around the same time Dylan Farrow, another of Mia's adopted daughters, accused Allen of sexual assault. Despite the allegations and the subsequent scrutiny following the documentary "Allen v. Farrow," Allen's career has continued to thrive, with a multitude of films and accolades to his name. The narrative contrasts Allen's professional success with the ongoing support from Hollywood figures against the backdrop of Dylan Farrow's unwavering account of abuse, which she has maintained for nearly three decades. The piece also touches on the broader cultural implications of Allen's case, questioning society's treatment of sexual abuse survivors and the moral ambiguities within the film industry.

Opinions

  • The article suggests that Hollywood has largely overlooked the serious allegations against Woody Allen, continuing to celebrate his work and collaborate with him.
  • There is an implication that the timing of the allegations, coinciding with the revelation of Allen's relationship with Soon-Yi, may have influenced public perception and the initial reaction of the media.
  • The piece conveys a critical view of the legal system's handling of Dylan Farrow's allegations, highlighting the psychological report that deemed her an unreliable witness despite prosecutors finding probable cause for arrest.
  • The author seems to sympathize with Dylan Farrow, emphasizing her courage in maintaining her story and questioning the ethics of Allen's actions, both in his personal life and as reflected in his films.
  • The article reflects on the societal implications of celebrity worship and the prioritization of artistic achievement over accountability for personal misconduct.
  • It is suggested that the narrative within Allen's films, often involving relationships with significant age differences or blurred family roles, mirrors his real-life controversies, which some may find troubling or morally questionable.
  • The author encourages readers to consider the impact of their support for Allen's work on the survivors of sexual abuse and to reflect on the broader consequences of separating art from the artist.

And 30 years after, she stands by her allegations

I shared here a story my Mom told me that she vaguely remembered as a child after the war.

An ordinary family with a secret that the community found out later. The couple living in that small house across the street was not only living as man and wife but also as father and daughter.

It was an incestuous relationship, and they also had a child.

The daughter became the surrogate wife of his father after her mother was raped and killed by the Japanese soldiers during World War II.

That story never completely left me; the horrors of the war didn’t end after the Japanese surrendered to some it was only the beginning.

In the 60s, a family scandal exploded in the news when a father killed his daughter and her husband, then fired the gun at himself. His wife survived the carnage.

He couldn't bear to witness his daughter getting married. His wife knew about the secret, but like her daughter, she was too afraid, until it was too late.

The father had an incestuous relationship with his daughter.

The gruesome murders became the storyline in this movie classic.

Woody Allen, to retire?

Annie Hall. If you ask me to name a Woody Allen movie, it has to be Annie Hall, because how can you not remember this line,

Hey, don’t knock masturbation. It’s sex with someone I love. — Alvy Singer played by Woody Allen.

And 50 movies after, and at 86 years old, Will Woody Allen ever retire from directing movies?

At first, it was reported by Variety that he is retiring after he finishes his 50th movie, Wasp 22.

But with anything about Woody Allen, he denies that he is retiring, as it was in 1992 when he denied the allegations by his 7-year-old daughter Dylan that he sexually assaulted her in the attic.

That was 30 years ago, and here we are still talking about Woody Allen’s career and the fact that he had since made more movies after those serious accusations meant,

Hollywood turned a blind eye to a 7-year-old girl and celebrated one of their own — Woody Allen.

Many actors still adore Woody Allen, Diane Keaton and Scarlett Johansson are just some of the big Hollywood stars who would work again with Woody at a blink of an eye.

He even received the Cecil B. DeMille award during the 71st Golden Globes.

A few days after Variety reported he was retiring, his representative issued this statement,

Woody Allen never said he was retiring, not did he say he was writing another novel.

He said he was thinking about not making films as making films that go straight or very quickly to streaming platforms is not so enjoyable for him, as he is a great lover of the cinema experience.

Currently, he has no intention of retiring and is very excited to be in Paris shooting his new movie, which will be the 50th.”

Dylan Farrow

It will take almost 30 years, and a documentary to look back at how America gaslit Dylan Farrow in 1992.

All because the timing of the sexual allegations by then 7-year-old Dylan coincided with the revelation of Woody Allen’s affair with Dylan’s sister, Soon-Yi.

While both Dylan and Soon-Yi are adopted daughters of Mia Farrow, Woody was Mia’s boyfriend for 12 years.

He had seen Soon-Yi grow up from a child to a young woman. She was 10 years old when she first met Woody Allen. While he wasn’t her biological father, he was a father figure to her or at best the lover of her adoptive mother.

In the documentary, Mia recalled how she one day found a nude photo of Soon-Yi at Woody Allen’s apartment. They had an unusual relationship, they chose to live separately and kept co-parenting to a minimum.

Woody Allen admitted not only to the affair but that the photo was taken after he had sex with Soon-Yi. He was 56, and Soon-Yi was 21.

Both Woody and Soon-Yi who he later married on Christmas Eve of 1997 maintain that they first had sex when Soon-Yi was already 21 years old. But testimonies shown in the documentary say otherwise, that the relationship started when Soon-Yi was still in high school.

And we have to remember in 1992, Woody and Mia were still together.

After they split, the sexual assault allegations against Woody by Dylan were seen by many as a vendetta by a woman scorned that was out to take revenge against a man who didn’t want her anymore, forgetting the little detail that the man was dating her lover’s daughter.

The sister of his daughter.

No doubt Woody Allen delivers the goods. If it isn’t at the box office, at the Oscars, how many female actors won their first Oscar because of a Woody Allen film? Cate Blanchett, Mira Sorvino and Diane Keaton for Annie Hall.

“I’m not a big legacy person. To me when I die, you can take my films and dump them in the sewer. It doesn’t matter to me at all because once I die, who cares?” After all, according to Allen, “films are not my priority in life. I went into films so I could meet attractive women.” — Woody Allen

And he isn’t the only director that Hollywood continues to love, Roman Polanski was accused of rape, and yet he continued to be adored by Hollywood A-listers.

In an open letter by Dylan Farrow

For as long as I could remember, my father had been doing things to me that I didn’t like. I didn’t like how often he would take me away from my mom, siblings and friends to be alone with him.

I didn’t like it when he would stick his thumb in my mouth. I didn’t like it when I had to get in bed with him under the sheets when he was in his underwear. I didn’t like it when he would place his head in my naked lap and breathe in and breathe out.

I would hide under beds or lock myself in the bathroom to avoid these encounters, but he always found me. These things happened so often, so routinely, so skillfully hidden from a mother that would have protected me had she known, that I thought it was normal.

I thought this was how fathers doted on their daughters. But what he did to me in the attic felt different. I couldn’t keep the secret anymore. — Excerpt, An Open Letter From Dylan Farrow

He says, She says. Rape, sexual assault, or child abuse is hard to prove, especially in Hollywood.

Woody Allen denies the allegations, and he was never charged with any crime.

In 1992, everyone thought it was because prosecutors didn’t find any probable cause or worse that it was all made up by Mia Farrow.

And that the abuse didn’t come from Woody Allen but from a mother who used her daughter as a pawn to get back at a lover who was dating her other daughter.

When in fact prosecutors did find probable cause,

Mia Farrow took Dylan to a pediatrician to make a record of the seven-year-old’s claims, and the doctor informed The Connecticut State Police.

Child welfare services and cops began investigating the alleged abuse, but Allen was not prosecuted due to Dylan’s psychological fragility and her young age.

She was deemed an unreliable witness by a psychological report prepared by the Yale New Haven Hospital child sexual abuse clinic, despite prosecutors finding probably cause to arrest Allen for or 1st and 4th degree sexual assault of a minor. — Excerpt, SHOCK CLAIMS Disturbing footage shows Dylan Farrow aged 7 saying Woody Allen ‘touched her private parts’ for ‘father-daughter time’

Final words

Infidelity and cheating are some of the worst things that can be thrown at Woody Allen.

Even if the sexual assault charges were never brought to court, one must applaud the courage shown by Dylan Farrow as she never recanted nor changed her story after 30 years.

And to have an affair with your daughter’s sister, even if Dylan was only his adoptive daughter, she and Soon-Yi are sisters.

Again, even if they were both adopted, they only knew one mom, and that was Mia Farrow.

In another interview, Dylan asks,

So, what does Woody Allen become of her after he married her sister, is he both a father and a brother-in-law?

In the movie, Hannah and her Sisters, one of the sisters had an affair with her brother-in-law.

While in a movie it looks cute, in real life, it is a moral degradation and it is a recurring theme in many of Woody Allen’s movies.

That and of an older man falling in love with a much younger woman.

While Woody Allen would never stand in court to answer Dylan’s allegation, it is enough for us to listen to her story, because stories by victims of sexual abuse needed to be seen and heard.

We go back to what Dylan Farrow said about her favorite Woody Allen movie,

Woody Allen is a living testament to the way our society fails the survivors of sexual assault and abuse.

So imagine your seven-year-old daughter being led into an attic by Woody Allen. Imagine she spends a lifetime stricken with nausea at the mention of his name. Imagine a world that celebrates her tormenter.

Are you imagining that? Now, what’s your favorite Woody Allen movie? — Excerpt, An Open Letter From Dylan Farrow
