Crush Coding Bootcamps — Onsite Vs Online Which Matters Now?

The comparison is not as easy as you think.

Coding Bootcamps have sprung everywhere as the demand for software developers spiked. Universities are churning out scads of graduates each year. Yet the need for more software engineers in the market remains unquenched. People choose coding boot camps because they condense the skills to the one which is wanted to be studied specifically.

The effectiveness of bootcamps as compared to Academic institutions is another debate. A coding bootcamps is no replication of any Software Engineering or Computer Science degree. Often they are not regionally or nationally accredited. This makes employers want greater credibility and accountability from the Bootcamp attended. Nevertheless, they are a great jumpstart for beginners with no tech or development knowledge.

My context in a nutshell

To give you some backdrop, I did my undergrad in Computer Science and worked in a leading AI+Data company for quite some time. During my bachelor’s, I got inclined towards web development and enrolled in ‘On-site’ coding Bootcamp. I recently also completed 3 months of online Bootcamp on Udacity, which sums up the fact that I have the taste of the experiences + learnings+ operations on both learning ways.

Thereby my opinion will not be biased. Consider these points when choosing either of the options for yourself.

Lone wolf or a social birdie?

Back in my university life, I was in dire need of ‘learning-discipline’ in my life. If only I knew the knack of time management then, I could have taken the online courses in parallel to my degree. But guess what? It ‘never’ happened! (Despite several attempts 😐)

The key to learning outside the classroom is consistency and extreme discipline. These were the core operational values I found in On-Site Bootcamp.

Different learning styles suit different kinds of people. I have witnessed a few silent people getting well on their own terms. Eg: setting up their own timings, distraction-free places, and pace to study. It is ideal when there isn't too much on one’s plate at the learning phase. Since at that point I was occupied with my full-time studies, I found a refuge in Onsite Bootcamps.

On contrary, the other group thrives on social interaction to learn new and revise concepts.

I am someone who does stuff in a hybrid way, mainly because I am an ambivert. My strategy was to grasp the lesson in class and focus on the assignments. Then I would take my findings and same taught lessons the next day to class and share them with peers. This was an ideal situation for me.

The onsite Bootcamp extended my minimal network group to the next level, as it exposed me to interact with my instructors and classmates. Their queries gave me chance to reflect on my gathered learnings. If you are transitioning from a different industry to tech, then this may be your ideal chance if make new connections.

I met wonderful people and enjoyed my share of fun while engaging with them. Post-Covid, I have come to realize the meaning of those in-person meaningful connections, and for me, they were better than a transitory conversation over a zoom call.

Meanwhile the online Bootcamp I had consisted of a supportive community on slack which may offer somewhat the same chance for people who enjoy Online Bootcamps.

Actionables for you:

  1. Figure out your priorities. Example: skills, immediate job, networking. Ask yourself if you can be honest with yourself for targetted goals with a deadline.
  2. Navigate their learning styles and should identify how they can retain and apply the learned things.

What you seek is seeking you?

Rumi rightly put the above quote. This implies it will be “You” who can create an ideal reality for yourself to pursue your aims.

I won’t be wrong to say that I convinced myself to join Onsite Bootcamp because of FOMO(Fear of missing out). But beyond that, I went to Onsite Bootcamp to gain hands-on experience in building projects that could help me to land a decent job.

Soon after I was done through Phase1 which involved Front-end development I started getting the offers. The management kept track of alumni and sent invitations using the job board portal. After doing internships and attempting several interviews through it, this realization dawned upon me ‘This is not my final goal’, just yet!

Source: Maxtrain. According to CIRR data’s collected in 2019m 79% of the BootCamp graduates get employed.

In my opinion, great boot camps considering the time constraints the instructors have, can’t teach you ‘Everything’ related to the matter. However, great boot camps stress on ‘Teaching you HOW to LEARN’.

Actionables for you:

It may sound cliche for you to know this but the ‘Art of googling’ is an underrated skill. Be it online or onsite Bootcamp, this handy trick will be your constant learning companion.

Is the tassel worth the hassle?

The pace of onsite Bootcamp is often on the go and every class had an initial recapping of the previous lecture and then going forward. Meanwhile, in the online one, I was just on a rat race with myself to finish off the modules to get through them. It was my personal experience, however, in the ideal case, some good students may not actually do what I did. (#guilty)

But regardless, it all condenses up to how much accountable you are with yourself. Furthermore, time management lessons and the mentorship received directly from professionals were something I missed in the recorded video lectures.

The money element was gladly not a barrier in my pursuit of any of the bootcamps. Luckily the cost of on-site bootcamps was low since it was funded. I had to pay an initial registration fee as a security deposit.

Anyways, then for the online Bootcamp, I applied via an application form and won it. This is not what the majority of people experience. Coding bootcamps come with a cost and at times debt, but if your choice of selection is worthy enough you might not mind spending a few bucks on it.

Actionables for you:

  1. Include active recalling practice in either of the classes you attend. Do not start with the next topic until revising the previous lecture.
  2. Make no distinction between paid and free bootcamps. This owes to the human psyche where they don’t really value things unless they are paying for them. (#facts)

Winding it up

I spent a considerable time mulling over my Bootcamp journey. They have an image to make people employable and redirect careers. But don’t mistake taking Bootcamp’s role in teaching you everything.

Adding onto it, in my view, bootcamp’s role is to set the individuals on the right track. For both of the choices I made I don’t have any buyer’s remorse as both experiences taught me different things.

I have compacted the pros and cons enough in assisting you to make the right decision easily. My two cents will be to choose the one which favors your learning style and situation the most. Lastly, I believe

‘The sincere energy invested in either of the options will definitely bounce back in wondrous ways to you!’

Good luck, from themarsgirls80✌️
